BARRIE SEYMOUR JAILED FOR RAPE IN CHESHAM: A DANGEROUS OFFENDER'S CRIME REVEALED
In September 2010, a man from Chesham named Barrie Seymour was sentenced to a minimum of seven years in prison after being convicted of heinous crimes involving a 15-year-old girl. The court heard that Seymour, aged 29 and residing at The Chase in Chesham, had committed multiple acts of sexual violence against a vulnerable young girl, whose identity remains protected by law.During the trial at Aylesbury Crown Court, Seymour was found guilty on three counts of rape and five counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child. The jury's verdict reflected the severity and brutality of his actions, which the judge described as “violent, repetitive, uncaring, and disrespectful.”
Judge Christopher Tyrer, presiding over the case, condemned Seymour for his complete lack of remorse. As Seymour was led away to the cells following the sentencing, he shook his head in defiance. The judge emphasized that Seymour had shown no genuine regret for his crimes and had instead called his victim “scum” during a police interview. The court was told that Seymour considered himself the victim’s social and intellectual superior, a belief that underpinned his abusive behavior.
In addition to the prison sentence, Seymour was subjected to a lifelong restraining order preventing any contact with the victim. He will also remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities. Judge Tyrer described Seymour as “devious, deviant, and dangerous,” warning that any woman who entered into a relationship with him would be at significant risk.
Addressing the victim, the judge remarked on her tragic situation, noting that she had become infatuated with Seymour, despite his contemptuous attitude towards her. Seymour had referred to her as “scum” during police interviews, revealing his disdain and dehumanization of her. The judge stated that Seymour had used her and her body solely for his own sexual gratification, with the full impact of his abuse likely to be understood only after many years.
Prosecutor Sally Hobson highlighted the ongoing trauma faced by the girl, stating, “She doesn’t believe the true impact has yet hit her,” and that it would take time for her to fully comprehend the extent of her victimization. The restraining order was seen as a measure to provide her with some peace of mind amid her recovery.
While Seymour was acquitted of two additional counts of rape, he had no previous convictions but was cautioned in connection with an incident involving his partner, which the court acknowledged was less severe than the crimes for which he was sentenced.
Detective Sergeant Nicola Corani of Chiltern CID expressed her commitment to justice, stating, “This conviction for rape demonstrates our determination to hold offenders accountable. The victim was young and vulnerable, and Seymour exploited her trust. She has shown remarkable bravery throughout this process.”
