BARRIE SEWELL, MORPETH PENSIONER AND FORMER MUSICIAN, EXPOSED AS CHILD ABUSER AND JAILED

In June 2022, a disturbing revelation emerged from the quiet town of Morpeth, Northumberland, where a well-liked local figure was found to have concealed a dark past involving child abuse. Barrie Sewell, a 75-year-old resident of Stobhill Villas in Morpeth, who had previously enjoyed a reputation as a talented musician and a respected member of his community, was unmasked as a paedophile responsible for sexually abusing a young boy over thirty years ago.

The victim, whose life has been profoundly affected by Sewell’s actions, has carried the emotional scars for decades. The trauma inflicted by Sewell left the young boy feeling a deep sense of disgust and suffering from long-lasting psychological consequences. Despite the passage of time, Sewell continued to live his life as if nothing had happened, maintaining his social standing and engaging in community activities, all the while hiding his past.

During the trial at Newcastle Crown Court, Sewell faced two charges of indecent assault. He denied these allegations, but after a thorough trial, the jury found him guilty of the offences. The court heard that Sewell’s actions had a devastating impact on his victim, who delivered an emotional impact statement. The victim expressed that he would never be able to fully articulate the extent of the harm Sewell caused, stating, “I will never be able to fully explain the detrimental effect Barrie Sewell has had on my life. I have never been able to move on with my life, since being a young boy.” He further revealed that the abuse had haunted him for over thirty years, and he felt a sense of injustice that Sewell had been able to carry on with his life unpunished for so long.

The statement continued, “It affected every bit of my life and left me disgusted. It eats you up from the inside.” The victim’s words underscored the profound and lasting damage inflicted by Sewell’s actions.

Judge Andrew Smith addressed the court, acknowledging Sewell’s previously unblemished reputation. “He has lived the life of a ‘popular man,’ a person who has experienced success throughout his life,” the judge remarked. Sewell was known to have played in a band and had no prior criminal record. However, the judge emphasized that Sewell’s current situation marked a stark contrast to his past image. “Since these offences took place, you have lived a lie, appearing as a man of good character, but that is not the reality,” the judge stated.

He further explained that Sewell’s actions had caused irreparable harm to his victim, who had endured years of shame and anxiety. The court sentenced Sewell to five and a half years in prison and ordered him to sign the sex offenders register for life. The judge concluded by saying that the victim was now able to release the burden of shame and anxiety that had weighed heavily on him for three decades, finally placing it where it belonged—on the person responsible for the abuse, Barrie Sewell.
