ASHLEY WOODRUFF OF YEOVIL SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG NEAR DEATH

In a disturbing case of animal neglect, Ashley Woodruff, a resident of St Johns Road in Yeovil, was found guilty of causing severe suffering to a dog named Barney. The incident came to light after a concerned member of the public tipped off authorities, prompting RSPCA inspector Marie Griffith to visit Woodruff's residence.

Upon arrival, Inspector Griffith observed Woodruff holding a small brown terrier-type dog tightly. Despite the dog's body being mostly concealed by Woodruff's arms, the inspector immediately recognized that Barney was in an extremely dire condition. The dog was severely emaciated, with no visible body fat, and his ribs, spine, and pelvic bones were prominently exposed. The sunken appearance of the sockets behind Barney’s eyes further underscored his critical state. His coat was dull and unkempt, and he appeared lethargic, showing signs of depression and dehydration.

Barney was promptly transported to a veterinary clinic for urgent medical assessment and treatment. Veterinarians confirmed that the dog weighed only 4.8 kilograms, a weight significantly below the expected for a dog of his age, sex, and breed. The medical team also diagnosed hypothermia, attributing it to Barney’s inability to generate sufficient body heat due to the lack of fat reserves, a consequence of prolonged neglect. The dog was admitted to the hospital, where he received intravenous fluids, warming treatments, and intensive care aimed at rehydration and raising his body temperature.

Further examination revealed that Barney was suffering from multiple rotten teeth, some of which showed signs of infection, adding to the severity of his condition. Inspector Griffiths noted that the veterinary report indicated Barney was likely close to death at the time of rescue. The report also highlighted that Barney’s suffering was entirely unnecessary, caused by Woodruff’s failure to provide adequate nutrition and timely veterinary care over several months.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of veterinary staff and the intervention of the RSPCA, Barney has since made a remarkable recovery. He is now enjoying a healthier and happier life in a loving new home, far from the neglect he endured.

In court, Woodruff was sentenced to 12 weeks in jail for animal cruelty. Additionally, he received a lifetime ban from owning or keeping dogs, ensuring he cannot repeat such neglect in the future. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the vigilance needed to protect vulnerable animals from abuse and neglect.
