OLDHAM WEB DESIGNER ANTHONY RYAN SENTENCED FOR CHILD INDECENT IMAGES
In August 2018, police executed a warrant at the residence of Anthony Ryan, a 45-year-old web designer from Oldham, following suspicions related to the possession of indecent images of children.During the search, authorities confiscated multiple electronic devices, which revealed the disturbing presence of over 600 images depicting minors aged between 12 and 16.
Prosecutors highlighted that some of these images had been downloaded as far back as ten years prior, indicating a long-standing engagement with illegal material.
Anthony Ryan, who resides on Edmund Street in Shaw, Oldham, admitted to the charges and pleaded guilty to six counts of making indecent images of children.
The court heard that Ryan had been working from home at the time of the offenses and was alone when he downloaded the illicit content.
His actions were reportedly triggered by a period of severe emotional distress following the death of his mother, which he described as having pushed him 'completely over the edge.' During the sentencing hearing, Judge Sophie McKone addressed Ryan directly, emphasizing the gravity of his actions.
She stated, “Many people lose their partner or relatives and don’t resort to looking at indecent images of children.
But I accept that at the time these offenses were committed, your mental health was not as good as it could be.” The judge further explained the broader implications of Ryan’s conduct, saying, “Although you may not have directly touched a child, you play your part in the abuse of children.
While there’s a market for images like this, you feed into that market.
Children will continue to be abused.” As part of his sentence, Ryan was given a six-month prison term, suspended for 18 months.
Additionally, he was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and attend 35 days of rehabilitation activities.
He is also required to sign the sex offender register for a period of ten years, reflecting the serious nature of his offenses and the ongoing risk posed by such conduct.
