ANTHONY MCNALLY FROM TOTTINGTON ESCAPES PRISON AFTER MOLESTATION CASE IN BURY AND DERBY
In May 2022, Anthony McNally, a 73-year-old former educator residing on Rhine Close in Tottington, was involved in a high-profile case concerning allegations of sexual misconduct that spanned over a decade. McNally, who previously taught at Woodhey High School and Derby Grammar School in Bury, faced serious charges related to the indecent assault of two young pupils during the 1970s and 1980s.Specifically, he was convicted of abusing a 13-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, with the incidents occurring between the years 1974 and 1988. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the nature of the offenses, which took place during his tenure at these educational institutions. Despite the gravity of the accusations, McNally was not sentenced to immediate imprisonment.
Instead, Judge Abigail Hudson delivered a verdict that included a suspended sentence, emphasizing that McNally had otherwise led an exemplary life. The judge acknowledged the significant passage of time since the offenses and highlighted the societal differences at the time they occurred. In her remarks, she stated that during the period when the crimes were committed, there was “a different understanding of sexual harm,” and she noted that McNally was “a different man now to the one you were then.”
This case has sparked considerable discussion about historical allegations of abuse, the context of past societal norms, and the importance of justice for victims. McNally’s residence in Tottington and his previous employment at local schools have kept this case in the public eye, raising questions about safeguarding and accountability within educational environments.
