FAREHAM MAN ANTHONY LAWTHER ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SCANDAL

In a case that has shocked the community of Fareham, Anthony Lawther, a 59-year-old resident of Bishopsfield Road, was found guilty of possessing and downloading a significant number of indecent images and videos depicting child abuse. Despite the gravity of his actions, Lawther was not sentenced to immediate imprisonment but was instead handed a three-year community order by Winchester Crown Court.

Lawther had previously pleaded guilty to five counts of making indecent images and seven counts of possessing indecent images during a hearing at Southampton Crown Court. The court was informed that during 2008 and 2009, Lawther had downloaded a total of 7,216 still images, including 49 that depicted the most severe levels of abuse. Additionally, he had acquired 488 moving images related to child abuse, with 125 of these falling into the most serious categories.

The arrest of Lawther was initiated after international law enforcement agency Interpol contacted UK authorities in April 2009. The agency provided information indicating that child pornography had been discovered on a server located in Luxembourg. This server was traced back to an address in Fareham, which was confirmed to be Lawther’s residence.

During the sentencing hearing at Winchester Crown Court, Judge John Dixon emphasized the disturbing nature of the images. He stated, “These pictures are of real children, real people being foully abused and degraded by real adults. And as long as there are people who obtain access to this material, there is a market to be satisfied by abusive adults the world over who inflict on these children the most awful indignities and abuses.”

The court acknowledged that Lawther had not actively participated in the creation or distribution of the images. A psychiatric report presented during the trial described him as not posing a risk to children in the physical world. Lawther expressed deep remorse for his actions, explaining that his behavior was driven by feelings of loneliness and a desire to retreat into nostalgia.

Judge Dixon, noting Lawther’s intelligence and education, remarked, “I am confident of the shame and humiliation you must feel in front of family and friends. I have as clear a picture of you as I can, and it persuades me that what you need is help and guidance, not incarceration.”

As part of his sentence, Lawther was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for the next five years and to pay costs amounting to £500. The court’s decision reflects a recognition of the complex factors involved in his case, balancing the seriousness of the offense with the potential for rehabilitation.
