ANTHONY KNOWLES FROM BELFAST AND SCARBOROUGH SENTENCED FOR KIDNAPPING CHILDREN IN LIVERPOOL

In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Belfast, Scarborough, and Liverpool, a 40-year-old man named Anthony Knowles has been sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of kidnapping two children and attempting to abduct another in the Sunlight Street area of Tuebrook, Liverpool.

Knowles, who hails from Belfast and was residing at Columbus Ravine in Scarborough at the time of his arrest, was caught after a series of alarming events that unfolded on June 25. The court heard that Knowles approached three children who were playing in the street, offering one girl five pounds to show him the way to a nearby shop. He then persuaded a seven-year-old boy and the girl’s ten-year-old sister to accompany him, although the older girl refused to go along.

According to court testimony, Knowles took hold of the two children’s hands with enough force to cause discomfort to the girl. Before setting off, he showed a seemingly affectionate gesture by kissing the boy on the top of his head and rubbing his hair. As they walked, Knowles embraced the girl, hugging her and stating, “I’ll take this little girl,” which visibly frightened her. When they reached the shop, he told the boy he could only buy one item, while the girl was allowed to select multiple items, further indicating his manipulative intent.

The children’s mother was informed of the incident by the girl’s sister, leading to the children being retrieved from Knowles. Police officers responded to the scene but initially could not locate him. However, five days later, the girl’s father was driving along when she pointed out Knowles, who was then arrested at Tuebrook police station.

During the trial, Knowles admitted to asking the children for directions but denied any intent to lure them for harmful purposes or to touch them inappropriately. Despite his claims, the court was convinced of his predatory behavior. Judge Nigel Gilmour, QC, stated that a psychiatric report classified Knowles as being in the highest risk category for children, emphasizing the danger he posed.

Judge Gilmour expressed his concern over Knowles’s past convictions, which included a four-year sentence in June 1998 for kidnapping a seven-year-old boy. His criminal record also features convictions for indecent assault on both boys and girls while living in Northern Ireland, as well as a 30-month sentence in 1997 at York for indecently assaulting an 18-month-old boy. The judge concluded that Knowles’s actions and history demonstrated uncontrollable urges to harm young children, and he emphasized the importance of protecting the public from such individuals.
