A man aged 56, hailing from the town of Needham Market, has been handed a prison sentence of seven years after being convicted on five separate counts of engaging in sexual activity with a minor.

The conviction was delivered at Ipswich Crown Court, where Anthony Harmsworth was found guilty of these serious charges.

During the sentencing hearing, Harmsworth appeared in a wheelchair, with members of his family present in the courtroom.

The court was informed of his attempt to overdose on medication during his arrest, an act that underscored his mental health struggles.

Additionally, it was revealed that Harmsworth later attempted to cross Orwell Bridge, claiming that his health issues justified his actions at that time.

Despite having no prior convictions related to sexual offenses, the court acknowledged that Harmsworth’s mental health had been significantly impacted by childhood abuse, which was considered a mitigating factor.

The judge emphasized that while Harmsworth’s remorse and ongoing health problems would complicate his rehabilitation within the prison system, justice needed to be served due to the gravity of the crimes committed.
