ANTHONY GROVES FROM CWMBRAN SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL GROOMING OF TEENAGER IN CHATROOMS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Cwmbran, Anthony Groves, aged 53, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of grooming a teenage boy for sexual activity through online chatrooms. The incident highlights the dangers posed by online predators and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable youths.According to court reports, Groves initiated contact with the young victim, who was under the age of 16 and was residing in a care home at the time. The communication began after the boy posted his profile on a website, which Groves exploited to establish a connection. Over a period of time, the two engaged in sexually explicit conversations via the internet, during which Groves manipulated and groomed the teenager with the intent of sexual exploitation.
The situation escalated when the two finally met in person, leading to sexual activity in August of the same year. The authorities only uncovered the full extent of Groves' misconduct after an investigation was launched following a bizarre and frightening incident at a petrol station last year. Witnesses reported that Groves had collapsed at the scene, and police officers arriving on the scene discovered his teenage victim in a highly distressed state, splashing petrol around in a reckless and dangerous manner. The scene was described as both bizarre and frightening, prompting further investigation.
Further inquiries revealed that Groves was already serving a suspended sentence for inciting a boy to engage in sexual acts, which underscored the high risk he posed to the public. As a result, he was sentenced to an indeterminate prison term, with the earliest opportunity for parole set at two years and six weeks from the date of sentencing, minus 92 days already spent in custody. Additionally, Groves was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, and he was legally barred from working with or having any contact with children. He was also prohibited from owning a computer or using the internet, measures aimed at preventing further offenses.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by online predators and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable young people from exploitation and harm.
