ANTHONY CATCHPOLE FROM WIGAN SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES IN LIVERPOOL

In June 2012, a disturbing case involving a Wigan man named Anthony Catchpole came to light, revealing the extent of his involvement with illegal and highly disturbing material. The 50-year-old, a former soldier residing on Ollerton Close in New Springs, was found guilty of possessing and downloading a significant number of child pornography images, some of which depicted the most heinous acts involving very young children.

Catchpole's arrest was initially linked to a historic sexual abuse allegation, although he was never formally charged with that specific crime. During the investigation, authorities seized his mobile phone and computer for analysis. It was during this forensic examination that a shocking cache of images was uncovered. The police discovered a total of 706 indecent images of children on his devices, including 94 images classified in the second most serious category, which involved adults engaging in sexual acts with minors.

At Liverpool Crown Court, the prosecution, led by Harry Pepper, detailed the findings. They explained that Catchpole had pleaded guilty to 16 counts of downloading indecent images of children and one count of possession. The images included some depicting a two-year-old girl being raped, a revelation that underscored the severity of his crimes and the brutal exploitation of vulnerable children.

During his police interview, Catchpole denied any involvement in sexual abuse, asserting that his computer contained only adult pornography and that no illicit material would be found. Despite his claims, the evidence from his devices told a different story, leading to his remand while experts continued their examination.

Defense counsel Kevin Liston highlighted Catchpole's prior conviction for indecent exposure and noted that he still maintained some family support, including a niece who was present in the courtroom gallery. Liston, a former member of the armed forces with service in the Falklands and Germany, urged the court to consider alternative sentencing options. He suggested that psychological treatment might be more appropriate than imprisonment, arguing that rehabilitation could benefit both Catchpole and society.

However, Judge Gerald Clifton was unequivocal in his judgment. Addressing the court, he stated, “These offences are too many and too serious to treat you in a non-custodial way.” The judge emphasized that each image represented a child who had been subjected to brutal and criminal acts, and that the consumption of such material perpetuates the cycle of abuse by encouraging others to commit similar offenses. The court's decision reflected the gravity of the crimes and the need for justice for the victims involved.
