Anthony Catchpole

Wigan Sexual Abuser

June 2012 Child porn grandad is jailed A PERVERTED Wigan grandad found with disgusting child porn images – including a two-year-old girl being raped – has been caged. A judge told 50-year-old Anthony Catchpole that every such images means a child has been brutalised by having appalling offences committed against them. “The fact you and others like you chose to seek out these images and get enjoyment out of them encourages those brutes to take the image in the first place. “You are by your behaviour giving those people a reason to do what they do,” said Judge Gerald Clifton. Catchpole, a former soldier, of Ollerton Close, New Springs, had pleaded guilty to 16 offences of downloading indecent images of children and one of possessing them. Liverpool Crown Court heard that a total of 706 such images were found, of which 94 were in the second most serious category involving adults having sex with children. Harry Pepper, prosecuting, said: “Catchpole was arrested for a historic sexual abuse allegation though was never charged. During the investigation his mobile phone and computer were seized and analysed,” When interviewed Catchpole denied the sex abuse allegation. He said nothing untoward would be found on his computer and the only porn sites he had visited were adult sites. He was remanded on bail while experts examined his phone and computer and the images came to light. Kevin Liston, defending, said that Catchpole, who has a previous conviction for indecent exposure, still has some family support and his niece was present in the public gallery. He said that he had been in the Armed Services and spent time in the Falklands and Germany. Mr Liston urged the judge not to jail Catchpole and suggested that it would be more beneficial for him and society if he instead received psychological treatment. But Judge Clifton said: “These offences are too many and too serious to treat you in a non-custodial way.”
