ANTHONY BITTLESTONE'S HORRIFIC CRUELTY IN HOUGHTON-LE-SPRING: DOG STARVATION SHOCKS COMMUNITY

In March 2020, disturbing images emerged revealing the appalling living conditions in which a small dog was found in Houghton-le-Spring. The dog, a Jack Russell named Riley, was discovered in a state of severe neglect within the confines of a man’s kitchen, where he was found to be dangerously underweight and suffering from extreme malnutrition.

Riley’s condition was truly distressing; he weighed only around 3 kilograms, a stark contrast to the typical weight of approximately 7 kilograms for his breed. His ribs, hips, and spine were prominently visible, indicating a prolonged period of starvation. The dog was also shedding fur excessively, and his nails had grown too long, further evidence of neglect and poor care.

The discovery was made by an RSPCA inspector who visited the property of Anthony Bittlestone, a resident of Lilywhite Terrace, Easington Lane, Houghton-le-Spring. The inspector reported that the floor of the kitchen was littered with faeces, highlighting the unsanitary and neglectful environment in which Riley was kept. The inspector’s photographs, which have since been released to the public, depict the shocking state of the animal and the living conditions in the home.

Following the inspection, Bittlestone appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to two charges: causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and failing to ensure the welfare of Riley. The court proceedings revealed that the inspector had visited Bittlestone’s property multiple times in October of the previous year before finally gaining access and discovering Riley in a deplorable condition. The dog was described as being “extremely thin and very lethargic,” prompting immediate veterinary examination and treatment.

As a result of his actions, Bittlestone was sentenced to an 18-month community order and was prohibited from keeping any animals for a period of ten years. Meanwhile, Riley was taken into the care of the RSPCA, and since then, he has shown significant signs of recovery. The dog has gained weight and is gradually returning to good health, thanks to the efforts of animal welfare organizations and the dedicated care provided after his rescue.
