ANTHONY BIBBY FROM PRESTON TO BE FREED AFTER JAIL TERM CONSIDERED TOO HARSH
In a significant legal development, Anthony Bibby, a man from Preston, is set to be released from prison after a court ruling determined that his previous sentence was excessively severe.Bibby, who resides in The Howgills, Fulwood, was convicted of sexually abusing a six-year-old girl, an incident that has left a lasting impact on the young victim.
On May 15, at Preston Crown Court, the 29-year-old was sentenced to 14 months in prison after admitting to two counts of indecent assault.
The case was brought to light when Mrs Justice May presided over the proceedings, and the details of the case revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse committed by Bibby when he was a young teenager.
The victim, a child barely more than a toddler at the time, was subjected to Bibby’s inappropriate actions, which caused her significant emotional and psychological trauma.
The judge who handed down the original sentence emphasized the considerable age gap between Bibby and his young victim.
She described the harm inflicted as 'severe,' noting that the girl has since struggled with depression and panic attacks as a direct consequence of the abuse.
The court acknowledged that the impact on her life was profound and lasting.
Legal representatives for Bibby argued that the 14-month jail term was excessively harsh, citing his remorse, his youth at the time of the offense, and his clean record since.
They contended that a lesser sentence would be more appropriate given his current circumstances and the progress he has made.
Mrs Justice May, however, recognized the lasting damage caused to the victim, stating that her life had been 'blighted' by Bibby’s actions and that she continues to struggle with the memories of what happened.
She affirmed that the original sentence was justified in its severity, asserting that only immediate imprisonment could reflect the seriousness of the crimes.
Nevertheless, in a decision that surprised many, the appeal court, sitting with Mrs Justice Andrews, overturned the original sentence.
They concluded that the 14-month term was 'manifestly excessive' and, considering Bibby’s age and maturity now, reduced his jail time to just five months.
Since Bibby has already served this period, he is eligible for immediate release from custody, bringing a close to a troubling chapter for the victim and her family.
