In a case that has resurfaced troubling memories from decades past, Anthony Robert Archibald, a 72-year-old former deputy head teacher from Murray’s Road Primary School, located in Port Erin, has admitted to committing indecent assault against a young pupil during the 1970s. The court proceedings took place at Douglas courthouse, where Archibald appeared to face the charges that have haunted him for years.During the hearing, Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes described the circumstances surrounding the case as ‘extremely unusual’, emphasizing that the sentence handed down should not be seen as a minimization of the gravity of the allegations. Despite the unusual nature of the case, the court acknowledged the seriousness of the offense.
It was revealed that Archibald had a prior criminal record, with convictions dating back to 2005. These previous convictions involved multiple complainants and were described by prosecutors as ‘almost identical’ in nature to the current allegations. As a result, he had been sentenced to 30 months in prison and was registered on the sex offenders’ register, marking a significant chapter in his criminal history.
The latest complaint was brought forward by a man who is currently undergoing rehabilitation, having been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. The complainant sought to come forward as part of his process of healing and closure, revealing that Archibald had, on multiple occasions, placed his hands down the front of the boy’s shorts and touched his genitals. The victim was only eight years old at the time of the incidents, which occurred during Archibald’s tenure at the school.
Archibald’s guilty plea and the details of the case have reopened painful memories and highlighted ongoing issues related to abuse within educational institutions. The court’s decision reflects the complex nature of the case and the importance of addressing such serious allegations, regardless of the passage of time.
