ANNUAR AMEIR FROM TOXTETH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN LIVERPOOL

In April 2022, a disturbing case unfolded involving Annuar Ameir, a man from Toxteth, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a vulnerable teenage girl. The incident took place in Liverpool and has left a lasting impact on the victim, highlighting serious issues of exploitation and predatory behavior.

According to court proceedings, the assault occurred in 2018, shortly after Ameir and the 17-year-old victim had met earlier that day. The two had been out separately with their respective groups of friends, but later converged at a gathering in Liverpool. The day’s events culminated in the victim, who was intoxicated and had vomited outside the house, being carried into a residence by Ameir, who was also under the influence of alcohol.

Witnesses and court records revealed that Ameir, noticing the victim’s vulnerable state, took advantage of her condition. He carried her into the living room, where she was sleeping on a sofa, and proceeded to remove her clothes before sexually assaulting her. The victim awoke during the assault but was unable to resist or remove him. The attack was described as opportunistic and predatory, with Ameir attempting to deny any wrongdoing during the trial.

Prosecutor Gerald Baxter presented statements from the victim, emphasizing the profound and ongoing effects of the assault on her mental health. She reported struggling with depression and resorting to alcohol abuse as a means of coping with the trauma. The victim also expressed that Ameir’s denial of the assault caused her to relive the painful experience repeatedly during the court proceedings, which she described as retraumatizing. She stated, “It is all back in court again. I could not sleep and I am having flashbacks again.”

During the sentencing hearing, defense lawyer Louise McCloskey acknowledged the severity of Ameir’s actions but urged the court not to classify him as a dangerous offender. She pointed out that Ameir had no prior convictions and argued that his actions appeared to be opportunistic. McCloskey emphasized that the court’s decision to impose a lengthy prison sentence would serve as an opportunity for rehabilitation, addressing the attitudes that led to his offending. She stated, “He conducted himself abysmally on that night but prior to that, your honour, there is nothing indicating he was a risk in the past and would be a risk in the future.”

Judge Gary Woodhall addressed the court, condemning Ameir’s behavior and highlighting the exploitation of a vulnerable girl. He noted that Ameir’s actions had further traumatized the victim by forcing her to relive the ordeal through the trial process. The judge expressed concern over Ameir’s misogynistic and flawed views regarding women, stating, “You present as someone with a sense of male entitlement, with a misogynistic view of female characters.”

While acknowledging that Ameir’s conduct met the criteria for a dangerous offender, Judge Woodhall decided that an extended sentence was not justified in this case. Instead, Ameir was sentenced to nine years and nine months in prison. The court’s decision reflects the seriousness of the crime and the need for justice for the victim, who was left profoundly affected by the assault and the subsequent legal proceedings.
