ANDRZEJ AND AGNIESZKA LATOSZEWSKI HORRIFIC MURDER OF TEENAGE BOY IN HUDDERSFIELD
In a chilling case that has shocked the community of Huddersfield, a mother and her partner have been found guilty of the brutal murder of her teenage son after months of sustained abuse and torture. The tragic incident unfolded at their residence on Leeds Road, where Sebastian Kalinowski, a 15-year-old boy originally from Poland, endured unimaginable suffering at the hands of his stepfather, Andrzej Latoszewski, aged 38, and his mother, Agnieszka Kalinowska, aged 36.
Over the course of nearly five weeks, evidence was presented in Leeds Crown Court that painted a harrowing picture of Sebastian’s treatment.
The court was shown distressing footage captured by CCTV cameras installed within the couple’s home, which the prosecution argued were partly used to monitor Sebastian’s suffering.
These recordings revealed a series of violent assaults, including repeated kicks, punches, and stomps inflicted by Latoszewski, who practiced Thai boxing and was known to use weapons such as a spindle from a staircase and a bed slat to beat the boy.
Flex cables were also used to whip Sebastian, who was subjected to relentless physical abuse.
It was revealed that Sebastian, who moved to the UK from Poland in October 2020, had become so conditioned to his mistreatment that he would sometimes hand over weapons to his abusers before being attacked.
His mother, Agnieszka Kalinowska, was complicit in the abuse, actively encouraging her partner’s violence and participating in assaults herself.
She was also involved in verbal abuse and was seen holding Sebastian down while Latoszewski beat him.
Evidence of their communication showed mutual encouragement and support for their actions.
The court heard that Sebastian was subjected to humiliating and painful routines, including being force-fed and having a slipper shoved into his mouth with such force that he bled.
He was forced to perform exhausting exercise drills, such as hundreds of push-ups and squats, and was made to do chores while spending long hours isolated in his bedroom.
The prosecution described Sebastian as a “human punchbag,” and the treatment he endured was characterized as nothing short of torture.
Both the defendants’ legal representatives acknowledged that this case was among the most severe they had encountered in court.
On the day of his death, August 13 of the previous year, Sebastian collapsed and lost consciousness after a violent assault.
Despite the severity of his injuries, it was more than two hours before Latoszewski called for an ambulance.
During this time, the couple dressed Sebastian’s body and attempted to conceal the incident.
Latoszewski was observed pouring water into Sebastian’s mouth, allegedly to make it appear as though the boy had drowned, and then removing the CCTV cameras to erase evidence of their abuse.
When Sebastian was finally discovered, he was found to have over 80 injuries, including 23 untreated rib fractures that had become infected, ultimately leading to his death.
Medical staff at the hospital were appalled to hear Latoszewski laughing and joking about Sebastian being “naughty,” with the defendant dismissing the injuries as minor, suggesting that the most Sebastian would receive was a slap on the backside.
Latoszewski initially claimed that Sebastian might have fallen from a tree, attempting to deny any involvement in the boy’s injuries.
Both Latoszewski and Kalinowska faced multiple charges, including murder, manslaughter, causing or allowing the death of a child, and child cruelty.
Initially, they denied all charges, but during the trial, Latoszewski pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and Kalinowska admitted to child cruelty.
They maintained, however, that they never intended to kill Sebastian, claiming their actions were motivated by a misguided belief that their discipline was “reasonable punishment” for his alleged misbehavior, such as lying and truancy.
During the proceedings, Kalinowska testified that she felt she was controlled by Latoszewski and described herself as his “puppet.” When asked what she was thinking during her assaults on her son, she stated, “That I would just hit him like a mother would a son,” and believed that hitting her child was a normal form of parental discipline.
Latoszewski, in his defense, explained that he resorted to more aggressive punishment because traditional methods failed, and he wanted Sebastian to listen during school holidays.
He admitted that his lack of experience contributed to his actions.
On the day Sebastian died, Latoszewski claimed he assaulted the boy because he took “too long to get dressed,” a justification that the court found unconvincing, as evidence indicated Sebastian was a well-behaved student at North Huddersfield Trust School.
The jury took less than three and a half hours to reach a unanimous guilty verdict for both defendants.
Following the verdicts, Judge Mrs.
Justice Lambert commended the jury’s dedication, describing their work as “truly extraordinary,” especially given the horrifying footage they had to endure.
She also took the unusual step of discharging the jury from any future service, acknowledging their exceptional service in this case.
Sentencing for Andrzej Latoszewski and Agnieszka Kalinowska will be scheduled at a later date, as the court prepares to determine appropriate penalties for their involvement in this tragic and disturbing case.
