ANDREW WYLIE SHAMES BELFAST WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AFTER NEAR-FATAL ROAD ACCIDENT

In October 2021, a civil servant from Belfast, Andrew Wylie, became the subject of a disturbing criminal case that has shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about child protection and online safety.

Wylie's descent into criminal behavior was reportedly triggered by a severe road accident that nearly cost him his life.

The incident, which occurred prior to his arrest, left him requiring life-saving surgery and forced him to relearn basic mobility.

This traumatic event, Wylie claims, plunged him into a deep depression, which he says contributed to his subsequent engagement with highly illegal and morally reprehensible online activities.

Despite his claims of being overwhelmed by personal trauma, Wylie's past associations with the biker scene in Belfast have been noted by former friends.

They emphasized that his personal struggles do not justify or excuse his criminal conduct, which has led to his being sentenced at Belfast Crown Court.

Wylie was placed on a two-year probation period and was also subjected to a 10-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO).

Additionally, he was registered on the sex offenders’ register for a period of five years.

During the court proceedings, Judge Neil Rafferty expressed his internal conflict, stating that he was not sending Wylie to prison despite feeling a strong desire to do so.

The judge emphasized the severity of Wylie’s crimes, which involved viewing and sharing extremely disturbing images involving children.

The court was informed that police had raided Wylie’s Belfast home in August 2018, uncovering a cache of illegal material.

When officers explained the purpose of the raid, Wylie admitted to viewing indecent images of children.

Authorities seized two laptops from his residence, revealing over 2,000 images of extreme pornography, including bestiality and child abuse.

Wylie, who had been employed for years at the social security office on Snugville Street opposite his house, initially claimed that his interest in such images was driven by curiosity.

He admitted that “one thing led to another,” leading to his involvement in the sharing of these images with other online predators.

Wylie pleaded guilty to 13 charges, which included possession and distribution of indecent images of children, as well as possession of extreme pornographic material.

Following his arrest, he was compelled to leave his home in the Shankill Road area and has since been living in temporary accommodation.

Locals reported that Wylie had told them police were at his door investigating a fraud case, but when the full extent of his illegal activities was revealed, his property was vandalized with broken windows, forcing him to flee.

In sentencing, Judge Rafferty highlighted the heinous nature of Wylie’s crimes, stating, “Every image you saw was a real-life child being abused sexually so that image could be created for people like you to watch.

This is not child pornography.

This is child abuse.” The judge further warned Wylie to remember that each image involved a living, breathing child who suffered real pain and trauma.

He concluded with a stern reminder, “Bear that in mind if you are ever tempted to access such disgusting and depraved images again.”
