ANDREW SHIMMIN FROM ISLE OF MAN SENTENCED AFTER CHILD PREDATION STING

In December 2020, Andrew John Shimmin, a 55-year-old resident of Viking Road, Douglas, Isle of Man, faced serious allegations after being caught in a sting operation conducted by vigilant paedophile hunters. These individuals had set up a fake online profile, posing as a 12-year-old girl on Facebook, under the banner of a group called Elite Solo Decoys, to identify and expose potential predators.

Shimmin engaged with the fake profile on August 10th, initiating a conversation via Facebook Messenger. During their chat, he inquired about the girl’s age, to which she responded that she was 12 years old. The conversation quickly escalated as Shimmin asked the girl to exchange photographs, and he subsequently sent three explicit images of his genitals. In his messages, he described her as 'gorgeous' and expressed a desire to kiss her, revealing a disturbing level of predatory intent.

Following this exchange, the paedophile hunters contacted local law enforcement authorities and handed over their evidence, including the chat logs and photographs. However, the police informed the hunters that, under current laws on the Isle of Man, they could not arrest Shimmin at that time, despite the clear danger posed to children. This decision shocked the hunters, who then chose to publicly share the chat logs on Facebook to raise awareness and pressure authorities into action.

Public outrage ensued, compelling the police to take further steps. Devices from Shimmin’s residence were seized and subjected to forensic analysis. Investigators uncovered that Shimmin had previously contacted several underage girls, both before and after the initial exposure. The evidence revealed that the explicit photographs were taken in his living room, and his phone contained a complete history of the Facebook conversations, including the explicit images.

During police interviews, Shimmin claimed he lived with his wife but insisted they were not in a relationship. He stated that he befriended females on Facebook but only interacted with adults, exchanging photos with them. When shown a picture of the girl he had contacted, he claimed she looked about 13 and denied any recollection of speaking to a 12-year-old girl. Notably, Shimmin showed no remorse for his actions during questioning.

He ultimately pleaded guilty to the charge of sending an indecent message via telecommunications. The court, presided over by High Bailiff Jayne Hughes, determined that the offences did not warrant imprisonment. Instead, Shimmin was sentenced to a two-year suspended sentence and ordered to pay court costs. Bail was set at £500, with conditions that he must reside at his home address and not leave the Isle of Man without court approval.

Recent months have seen heightened concern on the Isle of Man regarding the leniency of sentences handed down to individuals involved in child abuse cases. The courthouse in Douglas has been the site of protests demanding stricter penalties, especially following the case of Charles Cover, 66, who was jailed in September after an appeal related to his sexual assault of a sleeping young girl. The community continues to call for justice and stronger measures to protect children from predators like Shimmin.
