ANDREW SHEARSMITH JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN HULL SUPERMARKET
In a disturbing incident that took place in Hull, a 45-year-old man named Andrew Shearsmith was convicted and sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting two young girls within a local supermarket. The assault occurred at the Asda store located in Mount Pleasant, a well-known shopping area in Hull, on October 26 of the previous year.
The court proceedings revealed the troubling details of how Shearsmith targeted the innocent victims during their shopping trip, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
According to court reports, Shearsmith’s actions left a lasting impact on one of the young girls’ families.
The mother of one of the victims, who was unable to be identified due to legal restrictions, expressed her distress and concern over her daughter’s emotional well-being following the incident.
She described her daughter as now being markedly different, noting that she has become more irritable and less comfortable with close contact, indicating the psychological trauma inflicted by the assault.
The mother emphasized the long-term effects her daughter would have to endure, stating, “She is going to have to live with this.” Prosecutor David Cammies provided further details about the incident, explaining that the first victim’s mother had observed Shearsmith staring at her daughter and had advised her to stay close.
Despite this precaution, the predator’s behavior escalated when, a few minutes later, Shearsmith approached the young girl in another aisle.
The court heard that Shearsmith placed his arm around her waist and squeezed, leaving a visible bruise.
The girl, frightened by his actions, thought he was about to take her away.
Her mother, noticing the distress, called her over, and they quickly contacted store security to report the incident.
Security footage and eyewitness accounts confirmed that Shearsmith was seen moving his shopping basket from one hand to the other, seemingly to conceal his actions as he stroked the bottom of another young girl nearby.
Although this second girl was unaware of what was happening, her distress was observed by another shopper.
The store’s security personnel detained Shearsmith until police arrived, leading to his arrest.
During police interviews, Shearsmith admitted that he was attracted to young girls, revealing a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.
Judge Simon Jack, presiding over the case, sentenced Shearsmith to 12 months in prison.
The judge expressed concern over the defendant’s admitted feelings, stating, “It is alarming you had these feelings and were prepared to go out to a supermarket in order to obtain sexual gratification from contact with young girls.” In addition to the custodial sentence, Shearsmith was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, attend a rehabilitation program, and was subject to a sexual offences prevention order.
These measures aim to prevent any future harm and ensure public safety in Hull and beyond.
