--------------------------- 2025-05-14 07:48: A CARLISLE based former teacher prosecuted for downloading 26,000 indecent child images flouted the court order designed to monitor his online behaviour.
Andrew McLean, 70, who lives in the Stanwix area of the city, admitted two offences when he appeared at the city’s Rickergate court.
The first was breaching a sexual harm prevention order imposed by a crown court judge in February 2023 for offending that spanned seven years and consisted of what was described as a “grotesque” collection of images.
The abused children were aged between one and 14.
McLean, of Knowfield Close, Stanwix, committed his first recent offence on March 5, and it consisted of him deleting his internet history, which the sexual harm prevention order forbids.
The second offence he admitted was failing to abide by being on the Sex Offender Register.
He did this by failing to notify the police that he had a passport.
After hearing the details, magistrates imposed a 16-week jail term but suspended the sentence for two years.
The magistrates also specified that the defendant must complete up to 15 rehabilitation activity days with the Probation Service.
He must also pay costs of £85 and a £175 victim surcharge.
During his 2023 case, police found 72 of the illegal images at his home, categorized as the most serious category A.
The images had been downloaded between 2014 and 2021, catalogued in alphabetical order and stored on a PowerPoint file.
The court heard that McLean, who formerly lived in Sunderland, had moved to sheltered accommodation in Carlisle.
He admitted three charges of making indecent child images.
The judge imposed an eight-month jail sentence suspended for two years and put McLean on the Sex Offender Register for a decade.
Judge Julie Clemitson told him that each image depicts real children being abused, causing untold harm, and that such images are circulated worldwide.
His lawyer expressed remorse, describing the images as grotesque and noting that McLean's lifestyle has been severely impacted, including losing his home and good name, and relocating away from the community.
Formerly working in insurance, he became a teacher in 2000, and now faces multiple court orders and sentences for his offences.
