ANDREW MATTHEWS SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR CHILD RAPE IN GOOLE AND IRELAND

In a landmark case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Goole, Andrew Matthews, a 35-year-old man with ties to the town, has been handed a life sentence after being convicted of heinous crimes involving a young girl. The case unfolded after Matthews was extradited from Ireland, where he had fled following the initial allegations, to face multiple serious charges in the United Kingdom.

Matthews faced a total of 20 charges related to the sexual abuse and neglect of a girl who was under the age of 14 at the time the offenses occurred. The incidents spanned a troubling period from December 1996 to May 2004, covering nearly seven years of alleged abuse. Despite the gravity of the accusations, Matthews initially refused to enter any pleas when the case was scheduled for trial at Hull Crown Court in July. However, at the last minute, he changed his stance and pleaded guilty to nine of the charges, leaving the remaining 11 charges on file with the Crown Prosecution Service for potential future action.

The charges Matthews admitted to include eight counts of raping a girl under 13 and one count of indecently assaulting her. The allegations first came to light when Matthews, then residing in Goole, decided to leave the UK and move to Ireland, specifically to live with relatives in Cork. This move was revealed during a preliminary hearing at Goole Magistrates' Court in January, where it was disclosed that Matthews had fled the country amid the allegations.

Despite his departure, law enforcement authorities in Humberside worked tirelessly to bring Matthews back to face justice. A European Arrest Warrant was issued, and he was located in Wilton, Cork. The authorities successfully extradited him to the UK, where he has been held in custody ever since. Concerns about his potential failure to surrender voluntarily and fears for his safety led to his continued detention, despite attempts to secure bail.

Following the completion of a pre-sentence report by the Humberside Probation Service, Matthews was sentenced in July. The court handed down an eight-year prison term for indecent assault. More significantly, he received a life sentence for each of the eight rape charges, with all sentences to run concurrently. The judge stipulated that Matthews must serve a minimum of four years before being eligible for parole. Additionally, three further allegations of indecent assault and eight charges of cruelty to a child remain on police files, indicating the full extent of the case may not be entirely resolved.

Humberside's Chief Crown Prosecutor, Nigel Cowgill, emphasized the collaborative effort between the police and the Crown Prosecution Service in securing Matthews' conviction. In an interview with the Goole Times, Cowgill stated, "A considerable amount of hard work was undertaken by the Crown Prosecution Service and the police, who worked closely to ensure Mr. Matthews was brought back to this country to face the serious allegations against him." He further highlighted the importance of extradition powers, saying, "The CPS makes full use of all the powers available to ensure defendants do not escape justice, and we will use extradition proceedings when necessary."

Concluding his remarks, Cowgill reaffirmed the court's stance on such crimes, asserting, "The sentence the court has imposed fully reflects the horrific nature of these offences. There is no place in our society for depraved men who prey on young children." The case serves as a stark reminder of the relentless efforts by law enforcement and prosecutors to protect vulnerable victims and uphold justice in the face of heinous crimes.
