ANDREW LIGHTWOOD SHOCKS BRIDGEND WITH SEXUAL ABUSE OF BOY WHILE WORKING FOR THE ROYAL FAMILY

In July 2019, a disturbing case emerged involving Andrew Lightwood, a man with a notable past linked to the royal household, who committed a heinous sexual assault on a young boy in the Bridgend area.

The incident has left the victim deeply traumatized, with lasting emotional and physical effects, and has sparked widespread concern within the community.

Andrew Lightwood, aged 57, was once employed as a butler within the prestigious Royal Household, a position that placed him in close proximity to the Queen and Princess Anne during his tenure from 1978 to 1984.

His background was considered exemplary, and he was regarded as an upstanding member of society.

However, beneath this facade, he engaged in a series of disturbing acts that have now come to light through court proceedings.

The court heard that the assault took place on February 4 in the Bridgend area.

Nigel Fryer, prosecuting, detailed the sequence of events, revealing that Lightwood unbuttoned his trousers and performed a sexual act on himself in front of the young victim.

The victim, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, described how Lightwood exposed his private parts during the incident.

Prosecutors further stated that Lightwood then placed his hand inside the boy’s trousers, engaging in sexual touching that lasted for more than eight minutes.

The young boy, overwhelmed and distressed, eventually managed to escape by telling Lightwood he needed to go to the bathroom.

After the incident, the boy confided in his mother, who immediately contacted the police.

Her victim personal statement painted a grim picture of the ongoing impact on her son, describing how he now struggles with sleep, exhibits signs of anger and frustration, and has become very insecure.

She expressed her anguish, stating, “What [Lightwood] did to him will stay with him for the rest of his life,” and shared that her son has undergone counseling to cope with the trauma.

In addition to her account, a teacher at the boy’s school reported that he has been noticeably subdued since the incident, a change that is out of character for him.

Medical examinations confirmed the physical toll of the assault, with a paediatrician noting soreness and swelling indicative of rough handling by the defendant.

The overall assessment was that the boy was significantly disturbed by what had happened.

Andrew Lightwood, who previously worked as a verger or caretaker at a monastery, was arrested and initially denied the allegations.

His LinkedIn profile confirms his employment history, highlighting his role as a butler in the Royal Household, where he served for several years.

Despite his respectable background, the court found him guilty of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child and sexually touching the young boy.

In sentencing, Judge Niclas Parry emphasized the stark contrast between Lightwood’s outward appearance and his hidden actions.

He sentenced Lightwood to 28 months in prison and imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Additionally, Lightwood will be required to register as a sex offender for the duration of the order, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.

Lightwood’s case has sent shockwaves through Bridgend, raising questions about the safety of children and the importance of safeguarding measures, even among individuals with seemingly impeccable backgrounds.
