ANDREW LAWTON'S SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN SHEFFIELD REVEALED
In April 2017, a distressing case of child abuse emerged from Sheffield, where a woman who was sexually assaulted by her uncle during her childhood has come forward to share her painful experience. The victim, Lauren, now 34 years old, recounted how her uncle, Andrew Lawton, subjected her to abuse over a period of three years starting when she was just nine years old.
Lauren, a mother of two, chose to waive her right to anonymity to shed light on her ordeal and to encourage others who might have suffered similar abuse to come forward.
Her testimony followed the sentencing of Andrew Lawton, who was convicted and sentenced to a total of eleven years and six months in prison at Sheffield Crown Court.
Lawton, who resided on Archer Road in the Millhouses area, was found guilty of multiple charges related to his abuse of Lauren, as well as a separate case involving a teenage girl he raped, resulting in pregnancy.
During her emotional account, Lauren expressed the profound impact the abuse has had on her life.
She stated, “Most people look back at their childhood with fondness, remembering happy times.
But I don’t — he took my innocence away.
Girls my age should have been playing with dolls and babies, not suffering the abuse and seeing the things I was.
It still affects me, but now that I know he is behind bars I can try to deal with it and move on.” The court heard that Lawton’s crimes included indecent assault and acts of indecency with a child, for which he received a sentence of three and a half years.
His sentence for the rape of the teenage girl, which resulted in pregnancy, was eight years.
Lauren expressed her concern that there may be other victims who have yet to come forward, especially considering Lawton’s employment history.
Lawton worked at Heeley City Farm from 1994 until 2007, a period during which Lauren fears he may have had access to children on school trips and other activities organized by the farm.
Lauren, who is from Hackenthorpe, emphasized the importance of speaking out, saying, “I hope me speaking out helps others come forward, knowing that the police will believe them regardless of how long ago the offending was.
He ruined my childhood and I strongly believe there will be others like me.” She also stressed that child sex abuse should not be a taboo subject.
“The more we talk about it, the more people might come forward.
When you report something like this to the police, it’s handled with such understanding and sensitivity.
They do believe you and support you through the whole process.
It’s not something to fear or to be ashamed of.” Lauren concluded by sharing her relief at finally being able to report her abuse after living with the trauma for over 23 years.
She expressed hope that her courage would inspire others to seek justice and support, emphasizing that finally seeing her abuser behind bars has lifted a significant burden from her shoulders.
