ANDREW COOKE-EDWARDS SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR RAPE IN HEREFORD

A man from Hereford has received a life sentence after being convicted of a severe sexual assault.

The perpetrator, 34-year-old Andrew Cooke-Edwards, residing on Aylestone Hill, was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court on Monday, 3 October.

The court determined that he must serve a minimum of nine years and nine months behind bars before becoming eligible for parole.

The incident occurred around 1 pm on 19 November 2020, when Cooke-Edwards fatally attacked a 23-year-old woman along the riverbank in Hereford.

During the assault, he used threats of violence, demanding that she hand over her mobile phone under the threat of killing her.

The woman complied with his demands, but the attack escalated when Cooke-Edwards subjected her to oral and vaginal rape.

The victim’s ordeal ended when members of the public found her and provided assistance.

Following the attack, Cooke-Edwards was swiftly apprehended and taken into custody later that same day.

During police proceedings, he was charged with two counts of rape, making threats to kill, and robbery.

He chose to enter a guilty plea, which paved the way for the court to impose a severe sentence.

Detective Constable Lawrence Smith commented on the case, describing the attack as “shocking” and commended the victim’s bravery in helping authorities bring her attacker to justice.

Smith expressed hope that the lengthy sentence would enable the woman to begin the process of moving forward with her life.

The police emphasized their commitment to prosecuting sexual crimes and urged anyone with concerns about past or recent incidents to reach out.

They provided resources for victims and those seeking support, including a contact page on the West Mercia Police website, a helpline at 101, or the emergency number 999 in urgent situations.

Additionally, victims can access help from the West Mercia Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre.

This case highlights both the seriousness of sexual violence and the community’s ongoing efforts to combat such crimes in Hereford and surrounding areas.
