ANDREW CONIBEAR'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL NEGLECT IN ILFRACOMBE REVEALED

Andrew John Conibear, a farmer residing at Vellacott Farm in Combe Martin, Ilfracombe, has been found guilty of severe neglect towards his livestock. Born around 1964, Conibear's failure to properly care for his animals has drawn significant legal and regulatory attention.

Over a period exceeding two years, authorities from multiple regions—including Devon, Plymouth, Somerset, and Torbay—along with veterinary experts from the Animal and Plant Health Agency, repeatedly warned Conibear about the deteriorating condition of his farm animals. Despite these warnings, the situation did not improve, and the animals continued to suffer under his care.

The livestock on his farm were found in a deplorable state, suffering from malnutrition and inadequate living conditions. Many animals lacked sufficient food, and their environment was unsuitable for proper rest and laying. The neglect was so severe that it prompted intervention from authorities and veterinary professionals.

One particularly distressing incident involved a lamb that was so weak and frail it was unable to stand. Recognizing the animal’s suffering and the inability to save it, veterinary staff had no choice but to euthanise the lamb to prevent further pain and distress. This tragic event underscored the severity of the neglect and the urgent need for intervention.

Conibear ultimately pleaded guilty to charges of failing to care for his animals and for neglecting to dispose of dead livestock in a timely manner, which further compounded the cruelty involved. The court took these violations seriously, and his sentencing reflected the gravity of his actions.

He was ordered to pay a fine of £150 along with a victim surcharge of £34. Additionally, the court imposed a ban on him keeping cattle and sheep for a period of two years. However, this ban was suspended for three months, providing Conibear with a limited window to sell or properly dispose of his remaining livestock. The suspension was intended to give him an opportunity to rectify the situation without further legal repercussions.

This case highlights the ongoing issues of animal welfare violations in the region and underscores the importance of regulatory oversight and enforcement to prevent such neglect from occurring in the future.
