ANDREW CAMPBELL BRAWL IN BROUGHTY FERRY: MILITARY VETERAN SENTENCED FOR NEARLY 15 YEARS OF ABUSE
Andrew Campbell, a 58-year-old man with a military background, has been found guilty of subjecting his partner to a prolonged period of emotional and physical abuse spanning nearly fifteen years. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of violence and harassment that took place within their shared residence in Broughty Ferry, beginning in November 2010 and continuing until April 2024.According to court reports, Campbell was frequently violent towards his partner, often resorting to punching her during episodes of rage. His aggressive behavior extended beyond physical violence to include damaging and hiding her personal belongings, such as her phones and keys—items crucial for her employment and daily functioning. The victim described Campbell during a Christmas incident in 2023 as behaving like a ‘drill sergeant,’ barking orders and issuing abusive commands while under the influence of alcohol and sleeping tablets. This incident exemplified his escalating intoxication-related conduct, which contributed to the deterioration of their relationship.
The court heard that Campbell’s binge drinking habits played a significant role in his increasingly aggressive behavior. His verbal abuse was relentless, characterized by shouting, swearing, and insulting both his partner and her family, including her deceased mother. One particularly alarming incident involved Campbell punching his partner in the hallway while a child was present, leaving her with visible bruises and physical injuries. The abuse was not limited to isolated incidents but was part of a persistent pattern of coercive and violent conduct over many years.
Campbell pleaded guilty to multiple counts of assault and admitted to engaging in a continuous pattern of abusive behavior from 2010 through 2024. It was also noted that he was already serving a separate community order related to domestic offenses, indicating a history of similar conduct. In sentencing, the court imposed an 18-month community payback order, which includes mandatory supervision, participation in a domestic offending program, and the requirement to complete 250 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, Campbell was issued a five-year non-harassment order to protect his partner from further contact.
The sheriff overseeing the case acknowledged Campbell’s efforts to demonstrate remorse and his attempts at self-improvement, emphasizing that incarceration might hinder his progress. During the court proceedings, Campbell expressed regret for his actions and recognized the importance of his ongoing journey toward change. The court’s decision reflects a recognition of both the severity of his offenses and the potential for rehabilitation, with a focus on preventing further harm in the future.
