ANDREW BLENKINSOPP AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ABUSE IN CARLISLE

A man from Carlisle, Andrew Blenkinsopp, has been brought to justice after decades of avoiding accountability for his past actions.

The case centers around his sexual abuse of a schoolgirl more than 40 years ago, when he was a teenager himself.

The incident only came to light recently, following his return to the United Kingdom from his residence in Russia.

During the period of the abuse, Blenkinsopp, who is now 58 years old, used intimidation and threats to silence his young victim.

He bullied her and warned her that if she spoke out about what had happened, no one would believe her.

His tactics of coercion and fear kept her silent for many years, but eventually, with the encouragement of a relative, she decided to report the abuse to authorities.

This report led to Blenkinsopp being formally charged.

On the day he was scheduled to stand trial, he was arrested at the airport upon his return from Russia, where he had been living.

He was in the process of renewing his visa when law enforcement detained him.

During police interviews, Blenkinsopp admitted to committing nine sexual assaults against the girl, including two acts that were described as being equivalent to rape.

Following the conclusion of the case, Cumbria Police issued a statement emphasizing that it is never too late for victims to come forward and seek justice.

The police also praised the victim’s bravery in reporting the crimes after so many years.

Prosecutor Tim Evans detailed how Blenkinsopp physically dominated the young girl, pinning her down during the assaults.

The court heard that the abuse occurred when the victim was between 14 and 16 years old.

Evans explained that Blenkinsopp also threatened her, warning that if she told anyone, she would face disbelief and negative consequences.

In her victim impact statement, the woman described her realization of the wrongfulness of the acts as she grew older and became more aware of sexual matters.

She recounted that the abuse was primarily accompanied by verbal threats, which kept her from speaking out at the time.

Blenkinsopp, who previously resided in Etterby, Carlisle, repeatedly told the girl that no one would believe her if she reported the abuse, further instilling fear and doubt.

Prosecutor Evans highlighted the profound and lasting impact the abuse had on her, noting the severe psychological harm she endured.

During the court proceedings, Blenkinsopp’s defense lawyer, Daniel Bramhall, provided context about his client’s background.

He mentioned that Blenkinsopp had a troubled upbringing and had been living in Russia with his wife since 2011.

Bramhall stated that Blenkinsopp had addressed his alcohol issues and was currently in poor health.

References submitted to the court painted a different picture of Blenkinsopp, contrasting sharply with his past behavior, and he expressed that his client wished he could undo what happened.

When the judge, Michael Fanning, delivered his sentence, the victim and her family watched from the public gallery.

The judge acknowledged that Blenkinsopp’s actions robbed the girl of her childhood and teenage years, significantly diminishing her quality of life.

He described the psychological damage she suffered, including suicidal thoughts, difficulties in maintaining employment, and reliance on medication and counseling.

The victim felt “dirty” and deeply affected by the ordeal.

The court recognized her vulnerability and the bullying, force, and threats she endured, which served as aggravating factors.

However, due to Blenkinsopp’s youth at the time of the offenses, the judge was legally obliged to reduce the sentence.

Consequently, Blenkinsopp was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison.

Additionally, he was placed on the Sex Offender Register indefinitely and was subject to an indefinite restraining order that prohibited any contact with his victim.

After sentencing, Judge Fanning addressed the victim directly in the courtroom, describing the legal process as a “horrible mechanistic exercise” that was necessary to ensure justice.

He expressed hope that her suffering would begin to heal now that her abuser had been held accountable.

The victim expressed her gratitude, and the judge extended his best wishes to her and her family.

Following the hearing, Detective Constable Gabrielle Nicholson, who led the investigation, emphasized the importance of the case.

She stated, “I hope that this case sends a clear message to perpetrators that no matter how much time has passed, sexual abuse will not be tolerated by Cumbria Constabulary.

We will do everything within our power to hold people who commit these crimes accountable for their actions.” She also reassured victims that support services are available in Cumbria, regardless of how much time has elapsed since the abuse.

The police work closely with partner agencies to provide tailored assistance to each individual.

Detective Nicholson urged anyone who has experienced sexual offenses to come forward, acknowledging that taking the first step can be difficult but is crucial for justice.

She paid tribute to the victim’s bravery in reporting the crimes, highlighting her courage in seeking justice after so many years.
