ANDREW AUSTIN FROM SALFORD SENTENCED TO 27 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES

In a case that has shocked the community of Salford and the surrounding areas, Andrew Austin, aged 51, has been handed a severe prison sentence of 27 years following his conviction on multiple serious sexual offences involving children. The sentencing took place at Manchester Crown Court, where the court heard harrowing details of his crimes and the profound impact they had on his victims.

Andrew Austin was found guilty of four counts of rape, six counts of indecent assault, two counts of indecency with a child, and one count of sexual assault. These offences spanned over several years, during which he preyed on four young victims, subjecting them to acts that have been described as both cruel and despicable. The case only came to light after one of the victims, along with a charity worker who was assisting the victims, contacted the police, prompting an investigation that eventually uncovered the full extent of Austin’s crimes.

Throughout the police interview, Austin initially maintained his innocence, protesting against the allegations. However, as the investigation progressed and evidence was gathered, he ultimately admitted to the offences before the case proceeded to trial. His admission did little to mitigate the severity of his sentence, which reflects the gravity of his actions and the lasting damage inflicted upon his victims.

Hailing from Salford, specifically from Sumner Road, Irlam o’th Heights, Austin’s crimes have left a deep scar on the community. The court heard that his abuse had long-lasting effects on the victims. One victim, struggling to cope with the trauma, turned to alcohol and drugs, including cannabis, as a means to numb the memories of the abuse. Another victim reported starting to smoke cannabis to deal with a persistent sense of shame that haunted them. The court was told that Austin showed no remorse for his actions against this particular victim.

Furthermore, the court heard that the psychological impact on some victims was profound. One individual described the abuse as causing them 'real difficulties,' leaving them feeling unable to move forward and live a fulfilling life. The court emphasized that the effects of Austin’s crimes had been devastating, with some victims feeling too overwhelmed or frightened to speak out for years.

Judge Richard Mansell QC, presiding over the case, addressed Austin directly during sentencing. He stated that Austin posed an 'ongoing risk to young children' and highlighted the importance of public safety. The judge acknowledged that Austin had taken some time to admit guilt, but noted that his honesty had at least spared his victims the ordeal of a trial and the pain of being accused of lying. The judge also emphasized the considerable emotional toll on the victims and their long-term suffering.

As part of his sentence, Austin will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. He will serve a minimum of half of his 27-year term in prison before being eligible for parole, contingent upon the Parole Board’s assessment of his safety and risk to the public. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of sexual abuse and the importance of justice for victims.
