AMANDA KERNOHAN OF BALLYMENA SENTENCED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY

Amanda Rosemary Kernohan, born on January 24, 1974, and residing on Orkney Drive in Ballymena BT42 4EG, was convicted in 2019 of neglecting her elderly German Shepherd dog. The dog was left to become emaciated while suffering from a large, untreated cancerous tumour.

Kernohan, a mother of two, admitted to failing to take her cancer-stricken dog to a veterinarian and allowing him to deteriorate. She pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to her dog, Bruno, in violation of section 4 of the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011.

The charge was brought by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council following an investigation by Animal Welfare Officers. They discovered Bruno in a severely emaciated and dehydrated condition, unable to stand due to his health issues, including a large untreated cancerous tumour.

As a result of her conviction, Kernohan was sentenced to 120 hours of community service. She was also ordered to pay costs of £268. There was no prohibition on owning animals imposed as part of the sentence.
