ALLAN MCMEIKAN FROM LEVEN SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE DOWNLOADS IN DUNFERMLINE
In May 2019, a man from Leven, identified as Allan McMeikan, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of downloading a significant number of indecent images of children.The case was heard at Dunfermline Sheriff Court, where McMeikan, aged 51 and residing at Durie Gardens Cottage in Leven, faced serious charges related to child exploitation.
McMeikan’s arrest and subsequent sentencing followed an investigation into his electronic devices, which revealed that he had downloaded more than 1,000 illicit images.
Specifically, authorities discovered that his mobile phone contained a total of 1,002 indecent photographs of children, with 217 of these classified as the most severe category, known as ‘A’.
These images depicted the rape of young children, a detail highlighted by Sheriff Charles MacNair during the sentencing.
During police interviews, McMeikan was unable to provide a consistent explanation for how these images came to be on his phone.
Initially, he denied any involvement in downloading the images altogether.
However, when an expert witness called by the defence examined his device, it was confirmed that he had indeed downloaded the images.
McMeikan later claimed that the images had been sent to him via email, but this explanation was met with skepticism.
It was also revealed that McMeikan had a prior conviction related to child sex offences, specifically for filming young girls, which added to the severity of his current charges.
His previous criminal record underscored the ongoing risk he posed.
In court, the prosecution emphasized the disturbing nature of the images, which included scenes of sexual abuse and rape involving children.
The judge, Sheriff MacNair, described the material as deeply troubling and indicative of a serious breach of trust and moral boundaries.
Ultimately, McMeikan pleaded guilty to the charges of downloading indecent images of children between March 12 and December 7, 2017.
Recognizing the gravity of his offences, the court sentenced him to 14 months in prison, reflecting the seriousness with which such crimes are treated under Scottish law.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat child exploitation and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children from such heinous acts.
