ALLAN BENTON, BISPHAM CHILD SEX OFFENDER, SENTENCED TO OVER 13 YEARS IN PRISON

In a case that has spanned over two decades, a woman who endured horrific sexual abuse as a child has played a crucial role in bringing her attacker, Allan Benton, to justice. Her courage in speaking out more than 25 years after the initial assaults occurred has been instrumental in ensuring that justice is served.

Allan Benton, aged 72 and residing on Oban Place in Bispham, was sentenced to a term exceeding 13 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to his heinous crimes. The court heard that Benton committed six separate offences over a four-year period during the late 1980s and early 1990s, crimes that have left indelible scars on his victim.

The police, who have been praised for their diligent investigation, expressed their appreciation for the victim’s bravery in coming forward. Her decision to speak out has shed light on what the authorities described as “horrendous” acts, which had long remained hidden for years.

The victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous for legal reasons, provided a powerful victim impact statement during her appearance at Preston Crown Court. She revealed that it took her many years to fully comprehend the extent of the damage inflicted upon her. Her statement detailed the profound emotional and psychological toll the abuse has taken, stating that it left her feeling suicidal and convinced she was a “despicable, dirty, untrustworthy failure.”

She further explained that the scars—both emotional and mental—continue to haunt her, affecting her daily life and self-esteem. “The emotional and mental scars have and will continue to haunt me for the rest of my life,” she said. “I have spent my entire life never feeling good enough, capable or worthy of anything, including being a parent myself. The reality is I have spent my life very sad and feeling very alone.”

Following a comprehensive police investigation, Benton was charged and ultimately pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of indecent assault, and two charges of gross indecency. These charges were brought before Preston Crown Court earlier this year, culminating in his sentencing last week.

Judge handed down a sentence of 13 years and six months, reflecting the severity of his crimes. The police and court officials expressed hope that this case will serve as a catalyst for other victims of sexual abuse to come forward, confident that their voices will be heard and justice will be pursued. The case underscores the importance of perseverance and courage in confronting past abuses, no matter how long ago they occurred.
