ALISTAIR TRAINI SHOCKS PERTH WITH PUBLIC SEX ACT AT AK BELL LIBRARY
In July of the previous year, a disturbing incident unfolded at the AK Bell Library in Perth, where 63-year-old Alistair Traini was observed engaging in a public sex act while viewing highly inappropriate images on a library computer.Witnesses reported that Traini had booked computer booth 13 at approximately 6:50 pm on a Tuesday evening, a time when the library was still accessible to the public.
According to court proceedings, a member of the public sitting adjacent to Traini noticed something alarming on his screen.
The individual observed an indecent image of a child and promptly alerted library staff to the situation.
It was during this time that staff members approached Traini and discovered that he was actively viewing images of naked children, which was deemed highly inappropriate and illegal.
Alistair Traini was seen with his hand down his trousers, a clear indication of his engagement in a sexual act, although his genitals were not visible to others.
His solicitor, Cliff Culley, clarified that the act took place within a closed booth, stating, “During the act his genitals were not seen by others – his hand was in his trousers.” Following the incident, Traini was brought before Perth Sheriff Court, where Sheriff Lindsay Foulis sentenced him to a fine of £1200.
The court heard that Traini had not committed any similar offences for at least twenty years, with Sheriff Foulis noting, “I’m not diminishing the nature of this offence in any shape or form, but equally it’s not one which is subject to registration under the sexual offences legislation.” Despite the serious nature of the act, Traini was not placed on the sex offenders’ register, a decision that mirrored an earlier ruling by Sheriff Janys Scott.
Sheriff Foulis emphasized that, given Traini’s age and the long period since his last offence, a monetary penalty was deemed appropriate.
The judge stated, “I am dealing with a man who is 63 and who’s not offended in at least 20, perhaps over 30, years.
In the circumstances, I think the serious nature of the offence can be brought home with a monetary penalty.” It was established during the court proceedings that Traini had previously pled guilty to the charge of public indecency.
The incident involved him viewing images of both children and adults on a public computer at the AK Bell Library on July 21 of the previous year, an act that shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about his conduct.
Earlier in June 2016, Traini, known locally as “Big Beasty,” was caught in a similar act within the same library.
Witnesses reported that he was seen “having a little feel” in a booth, with a staff member and a member of the public observing him.
The court heard that he was actively shifting in his seat and had his hand down his front, while viewing images of naked children, including one of a child on a beach estimated to be around six years old.
During police questioning, Traini admitted to the inappropriate viewing and behavior, stating, “I’ve not done this sort of thing in a long time.
I was looking at adults having sex and naked children.
I had a little feel and an urge so I started to sort myself out.” Despite the gravity of his actions, Sheriff Janys Scott declined to include him on the sex offenders’ register, citing the law’s requirement that an under-18 must be involved in the offence for such registration to be mandatory.
The court acknowledged that there was no direct evidence of a child being present at the time of the incident, which influenced the decision not to impose the registration requirement.
Traini was granted bail pending further social background reports, but the court’s ruling underscored the complexity of his case and the legal standards applied in such offences.
