RAPIST SENT VICTIM FLOWERS AND APOLOGY CARD AFTER ATTACKING SLEEPING WOMAN
2026-06-17 10:19: A man labeled a rapist, who sent his victim flowers and an apology card, has been warned that he may face imprisonment.During a hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh, it was disclosed that 43-year-old Alistair Ross told the woman he had "f***ed up beyond belief and was truly sorry." Ross pleaded guilty to assaulting the woman on March 3, 2024, while she was asleep and unable to give consent, had her underwear removed, and raped her.
The judge emphasized that Ross's guilty plea to such a serious crime meant a custodial sentence was the only appropriate course of action.
Lady Haldane stated, "You must understand the only possible disposal is a custodial one." The court was told that the woman had gone to Ross’s home on Floors Terrace, Dunbar, while on sedative medication.
She undressed to go to bed, leaving her pants on, and fell asleep.
She remembered waking to find Ross engaged in sexual activity with her, then falling back asleep.
She then woke again under similar circumstances.
Due to the medication’s effects, she was unable to speak during these times.
When she finally woke fully, she realized she was no longer wearing her pants.
Subsequently, she shared her experience with her family doctor and a support worker.
Ross sent her flowers and a card afterward, but she told him not to contact her again and urged him never to do this to anyone else.
Police were notified, and Ross claimed that he woke up to find himself having sex with the woman, realized she was asleep, and then stopped.
His lawyer, Neil Beardmore, acknowledged that Ross had some psychiatric problems.
Lady Haldane noted that since Ross had no prior convictions, she needed to review a background report before deciding on a sentence.
She postponed the sentencing to obtain this report and remanded him into custody.
Ross was also placed on the sex offenders' register.
