ALEXANDER STEER PLYMOUTH CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENDER SENTENCED
In December 2010, a man from Plymouth, identified as Alexander Steer, faced serious legal consequences after being found with an extensive collection of nearly 4,000 indecent images of children stored on his computer. The case unfolded when police executed a raid on his residence, located in Wolverwood Close, on November 13 of the previous year.
During the search, authorities uncovered a laptop, a desktop computer, and a memory stick, all containing a disturbing array of illicit material.
The images were categorized into different levels of severity, with 3,557 images at level one, 26 at level two, 14 at level three, and seven at level four.
Additionally, four movies at levels one and two were also recovered.
The classification system ranges from level one, indicating the least serious content, to level five, which is the most severe.
Further investigation revealed that Steer had engaged in online activities involving chat rooms and the Google Hello network.
Police discovered he maintained a handwritten list of email addresses belonging to individuals with similar interests, which he had graded according to their level of engagement with such material.
During police interviews, Steer claimed that his actions were part of an undercover vigilante operation aimed at tracking and exposing real internet paedophiles.
He insisted that he posed as a young girl or a man with children in online interactions, believing that he was acting to combat child exploitation.
Steer also expressed fear that going to the police might not be believed, which contributed to his reluctance to seek help.
Importantly, he denied having any sexual interest in children.
Representing Steer, lawyer Jason Beal explained that his client had attempted to develop psychological defenses to justify his behavior.
However, he noted that Steer was now beginning to confront the reality of his actions.
It was also revealed that Steer was a full-time carer for his disabled mother, a detail that added context to his personal circumstances.
During sentencing, Judge Paul Darlow addressed the gravity of the offense, emphasizing the devastating impact of child pornography.
He stated, “Child pornography means the loss of innocence and the theft of childhood from all those children subjected to that humiliation.
Those who indulge in that interest perpetrate this beastly business, which in many cases comes back to haunt them (the children) in later life.” As a result, Steer was sentenced to 36 months of supervision by the Probation Service.
He was also ordered to register as a sex offender by signing the Sex Offenders’ Register, and a Sexual Offences Prevention Order was imposed.
Additionally, he was mandated to complete the Internet Sex Offenders’ Treatment Programme, aiming to address and manage his behavior moving forward.
