ALEXANDER MELLOORS SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IMAGE CASE IN DERBY
In April 2022, a disturbing case unfolded in Derby involving Alexander Mellors, a 23-year-old man who was found to possess nearly 2,000 indecent images of children.The severity of the material discovered on his electronic devices was alarming, with police seizing multiple items from his Derby home during a raid.
Authorities conducted the operation on December 3 of the previous year, after receiving information suggesting Mellors was downloading illicit images of minors.
The police executed a warrant at his residence in Sandiacre, Derbyshire, and confiscated a USB stick, an Apple phone, a PC power supply, an Xbox gaming console, and an HP laptop.
Upon examination, these devices contained a significant collection of illegal content, including 304 Category A images—classified as the most serious—along with 25 movies.
Additionally, there were 332 Category B images, seven films, 999 Category C images, seven more movies, and 191 prohibited images of children.
During police interviews, Mellors was candid about his disturbing interests.
He admitted to having a sexual fascination with children since the age of 12 and confessed to downloading the prohibited images.
Despite his admission, he claimed to be a man of good character.
At Derby Crown Court, Mellors appeared in the dock visibly shaken, and he pleaded guilty to charges of possessing prohibited images of children and three counts of possessing indecent images of minors.
His parents were present in the courtroom, supporting him during the proceedings.
Judge Shaun Smith QC addressed Mellors directly, emphasizing the gravity of his actions.
He stated, “What you did was bad, and the reason it is bad is because the children in these pictures are real children being abused by men.
If people continue to look at these images, it can give the false impression that such abuse is acceptable or ongoing.” He further commented on Mellors’ social isolation, noting, “You have no friends and have struggled with peer relationships throughout your life.
You have effectively and metaphorically locked yourself in your bedroom.
You present as a pathetic character, and I mean that without malice.
You have suffered, and as a result, you have turned to your computer, describing it as ‘going down this rabbit hole’ to continue viewing these images.” In sentencing, Judge Smith opted for a community order rather than immediate imprisonment.
Mellors was ordered to complete 30 rehabilitation sessions and participate in a 42-day sex offender rehabilitation program.
He was also mandated to perform 150 hours of unpaid work and was issued a five-year sexual harm prevention order.
Additionally, Mellors will be registered as a sex offender for five years.
In a final remark, the judge asked Mellors, “You don’t want to go to prison, do you?” To which Mellors, visibly upset, responded, “No.” Judge Smith concluded, “Of course you don’t.
Stay out of trouble, stop looking at these images, and you won’t face further consequences.
And try not to cause your parents any more distress.”
