ALEXANDER AITCHISON FROM FALKIRK AND LEADGATE: SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE CASE REVEALED

In August 2006, the case of Alexander Aitchison, a man with a disturbing history of child abuse, came under intense scrutiny. Aitchison, originally from Falkirk, Scotland, had previously served time in prison for lewd, indecent, and libidinous behavior directed at a three-year-old girl. After his release, he relocated to Leadgate, near Consett in County Durham, where he continued to pose a significant threat to children.

Despite his move and the fact that social workers were regularly visiting his residence, Aitchison's past was known, yet the abuse persisted. It was during his trial at Durham Crown Court that the full extent of his criminal activities was revealed. He was found guilty of abusing another young girl, with charges including two counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault. The court heard that social services had been aware of his history and had been monitoring him, but unfortunately, this did not prevent further harm.

During the proceedings, Amanda Rippon, the prosecutor, expressed her frustration over the apparent failure of social services to prevent the ongoing abuse. She stated, "Social services have watched while the worst atrocities have gone on — you see it on TV and read about it in the papers. It is sad and unfortunate but I can say it is true. Sometimes things slip under, even under the gaze of social services."

The victim, a young girl, finally reported the abuse six years after it occurred. Her courage led authorities to track down Aitchison in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. The girl recounted how Aitchison would torment her using various methods, including pretending to shoot her with a pellet gun, which he would then laugh about with what she described as his "stupid, evil eyes."

David Williams, Durham County Council’s director of children and young people’s services, commented on the case, explaining that the incident was initially referred to their department from a Scottish social services authority. This authority had conducted a comprehensive risk assessment, including psychiatric evaluations, and was aware of Aitchison’s juvenile offenses. Williams emphasized that at no point did they have additional information that would have prompted further safeguards or actions.

However, police officials, including Chief Superintendent Scott, highlighted the importance of evolving police procedures. He explained that individuals with a propensity for serious offending are now classified as Potentially Dangerous Persons. Such individuals are subject to closer monitoring by law enforcement and other agencies to prevent future harm. This case underscores the ongoing challenges in safeguarding vulnerable children and the need for vigilant oversight of known offenders.
