ALEX BARNES BRIDGEND SCHOOL IT TECH ABUSES UNDERAGE GIRL IN SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENSES

In December 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Alex Barnes, a 22-year-old IT technician employed at a school in Bridgend, who was found guilty of grooming and sexually abusing a minor student.

The allegations revealed a pattern of manipulative and violent behavior that took place within the school premises, shocking the local community and raising serious concerns about safeguarding measures.

According to court proceedings, Barnes targeted a 15-year-old girl, whom he befriended initially through Facebook and later through his volunteer work at a school club she attended.

The grooming process began shortly after their online connection was established, with Barnes gradually persuading the girl to engage in sexual activities.

The abuse was not confined to online exchanges; it extended into physical encounters on school grounds, in his car, and at his home.

School staff became suspicious of the relationship after the girl confided in her friends during a trip abroad.

The concerns prompted an investigation, leading to Barnes’s suspension from his role as an assistant IT technician in February 2017.

Despite the suspension and police interviews, Barnes continued to contact and abuse the girl, coercing her into performing sexual acts.

The court heard that Barnes’s misconduct included slapping the girl, pulling her hair, and sexually assaulting her in various locations within the school, including an empty classroom and a disabled toilet.

Prosecutor Lawrence Jones detailed that Barnes’s sexual preferences included BDSM and sadomasochism, which he falsely portrayed as part of a normal relationship to the girl.

The court was shown evidence of Barnes kissing the girl, slapping her face and buttocks, and making her touch his groin during encounters.

He also took her for rides in his car, where further sexual activities took place, including face slapping and webcam interactions where he directed her to perform sexual acts.

During a school trip overseas, the girl’s roommates grew suspicious of her relationship with Barnes, which led to further scrutiny.

The investigation revealed that Barnes’s contact with the girl persisted even after his suspension, with the defendant continuing to communicate via webcam and meet in person.

In police interviews, Barnes admitted to having a friendship with the girl and engaging in kissing and cuddling but denied any sexual relationship, claiming their relationship was “romantic” rather than sexual.

However, analysis of his phone showed numerous messages, many of which had been deleted, indicating ongoing sexual coercion.

Further meetings involved Barnes forcing the girl to perform sexual acts at his home and in his car.

In May, Barnes admitted to having a BDSM preference but denied full sexual intercourse or slapping her face, insisting that their relationship was not sexual but romantic.

Just a week before his trial, Barnes pleaded guilty to six counts of sexual activity with a child and three counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

During the sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court, Judge Daniel Williams condemned Barnes’s actions, emphasizing the breach of trust and the manipulation involved.

The judge stated that Barnes’s behavior was deeply disturbing, especially given his role within the school and his position of authority over the girl.

He described Barnes as posing a “high risk” of harm to children and concluded that only an immediate custodial sentence was appropriate.

Judge Williams sentenced Barnes to five years in prison, ordered him to register as a sex offender for life, and imposed a lifelong sexual harm prevention order.

Additionally, Barnes was prohibited from working with children and was subject to a restraining order to prevent contact with his victim.

The case has left a lasting impact on the community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and safeguarding in educational environments.
