ALEC BINGHAM JAILED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES IN HANLEY AND LEEK

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Hanley and Leek, pensioner Alec Bingham has been sentenced to four years in prison following his conviction for indecently assaulting three young girls. The disturbing incidents, which took place over a period leading up to 2010, left the victims deeply traumatized, with one girl reportedly suffering multiple breakdowns and engaging in self-harm as a result of her ordeal.

At Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, it was revealed that Bingham, who once resided at The Travellers Rest in Leekbrook, Leek, had committed these heinous acts against vulnerable minors. The court heard that the allegations came to light at the end of 2010, prompting a police investigation that would eventually lead to his arrest and prosecution.

During interviews conducted in January of the following year, one of the victims recounted her experience, which appeared to have a lasting impact on her mental health. The court was also informed that Bingham, then 67 years old and living at Hodnet Grove in Hanley, attempted to take his own life when questioned by authorities. Prosecutor Nick Tatlow described the scene: "He was found by police at the side of the Leek to Buxton road in the area of the Roaches, bleeding from both wrists. When stopped by a police officer, he said: 'I have been a bad boy.'"

Despite these distressing circumstances, Bingham initially denied the allegations during his police interview. However, in a significant development, he pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault during a court hearing in May, thereby avoiding the need for the victims to testify in court. This plea was seen as a step towards acknowledging his wrongdoing.

Legal representatives for Bingham, including Anis Ali, argued that the offender was beginning to understand the gravity of his actions. Mr. Ali stated, "He has accepted responsibility and has demonstrated a willingness to engage in any form of assistance or help he is given."

Judge Paul Glenn addressed the court, emphasizing the seriousness of Bingham’s crimes. He pointed out that the offenses were aggravated by the fact that the victims were particularly vulnerable. The judge remarked, "Even now, you appear unable or unwilling to comprehend the damage you did to them. But to your credit, you spared them the ordeal of giving evidence."

As part of his sentence, Bingham will serve half of the four-year term before being eligible for release. Additionally, he has been disqualified from working with children indefinitely and is barred from participating in activities involving children and vulnerable adults. His name will also be registered on the sex offenders’ register for an indefinite period, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
