ALAN ROSS SHOCKS GLENROTHES WITH SEXUAL ABUSE CASE AT HIGH COURT IN LIVINGSTON

A man from Glenrothes has received a five-year prison sentence after being found guilty of historical sexual offenses involving two young boys in Fife. The conviction was handed down at the High Court in Livingston, where Alan Ross, aged 35, faced charges of lewd and libidinous behavior as well as sexual assault. The court proceedings revealed that Ross had committed these offenses at various addresses across Fife between August 1997 and July 2001.

Ross’s case was brought to trial after a jury found sufficient evidence to convict him on three counts. Following his conviction, he was ordered to register as a sex offender and his name was officially notified to Scottish ministers under the protections provided by vulnerable groups legislation. The court heard that Ross had initially denied the allegations, but the jury’s verdict confirmed his guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

During the sentencing hearing, solicitor advocate Iain Paterson emphasized that Ross was, in many ways, still a child himself at the time of the offenses, which occurred when he was between 12 and 16 years old. Paterson acknowledged that Ross’s upbringing was reportedly challenging, but highlighted that he had contributed positively to society as an adult. He pointed out that Ross had no prior convictions apart from this case and that he maintained the support of his partner, who stood by him throughout the proceedings.

Ross, who resides on Huntly Drive in Glenrothes, had consistently denied the allegations. The court was told that he underwent a trial by jury, which ultimately found him guilty of the charges. Judge Lord Kinclaven took into account several mitigating factors, including Ross’s difficult childhood, the significant time elapsed since the offenses, and his efforts to lead a pro-social life. The judge also acknowledged Ross’s involvement in charity work and the support he received from his partner.

However, the judge also noted the seriousness of the crimes. Victims had testified that they had been threatened with violence, though they were not physically harmed. One of the victims provided a detailed victim impact statement describing the emotional and physical toll of Ross’s actions, including depression, anxiety, nightmares, and a diminished ability to work. The court considered this evidence carefully.

In delivering the sentence, Judge Kinclaven emphasized that the jury’s verdict was clear and that the evidence against Ross was compelling. He stated that there was no alternative but to impose a custodial sentence, which would be backdated to February 10, the date Ross was remanded in custody following his conviction. The court’s decision reflects the gravity of the offenses committed and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from such harm.
