ALAN READ FROM GRAVESEND SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN MAIDSTONE

In a case that has shocked the local community of Gravesend, Alan Read, a 40-year-old man residing in Overcliffe, was sentenced to nine months in prison after being found guilty of multiple serious charges involving the exploitation of young girls through internet chatrooms.

The court proceedings revealed that Read had engaged in disturbing online behavior, posing as a youth to communicate with teenage girls. During these interactions, he sent explicit photographs of himself and made attempts to meet the victims in person with the intent of having sexual encounters. The case was brought to light at Maidstone Crown Court, where evidence showed that in June 2006, Read actively used online platforms to target minors.

Read admitted to six counts of causing a child to watch a sexual act and six counts of making indecent photographs of a child. His actions demonstrated a clear pattern of predatory behavior aimed at exploiting vulnerable young girls for sexual gratification. Despite his admissions, Read expressed a plea for help, telling police that he needed assistance to address his behavior.

Throughout the legal proceedings, a psychiatrist recommended that Read undergo treatment under a sex offender rehabilitation program. However, the probation service opposed this suggestion, citing his stubborn refusal to accept responsibility or face the reality of his actions. This refusal to acknowledge his culpability was a significant factor in the court’s decision.

Judge James O’Mahony, presiding over the case, concurred with the assessment of an experienced probation officer and emphasized the seriousness of Read’s conduct. He stated, “There is no doubt whatsoever that you were doing it for one reason only and that is sexual gratification. The fact you will not face up to it now is a matter of concern.”

In light of the evidence and the defendant’s attitude, the judge sentenced Read to nine months in prison, underscoring the gravity of crimes involving the exploitation of minors and the importance of holding offenders accountable to protect the community.
