ALAN LOGAN INVERNESS PENSIONER SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES IN SCOTLAND
In a case that has shocked the community of Inverness, a 69-year-old pensioner named Alan Logan was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Inverness Sheriff Court for his involvement in the possession of a vast collection of child pornography. The court heard that Logan had downloaded nearly 11,000 indecent photographs of children, along with approximately 1,800 videos depicting child exploitation, over a period spanning from April 6, 2009, to February 22, 2012, at his residence on Eddington Road in Inverness.
Sheriff Margaret Neilson, presiding over the case, emphasized the severity of the offense and stated that custody was the only appropriate sentence to reflect the gravity of Logan’s actions.
The defendant, who was identified as a first-time offender, had earlier admitted to taking or allowing the taking of images of children at his home during the specified period.
The court was informed that the collection included a staggering 10,900 still images and 1,800 videos, all of which were of an indecent nature.
Prior to sentencing, the court had deferred judgment to allow for background reports to be prepared.
During the proceedings, Logan’s defense solicitor, Duncan Henderson, acknowledged that his client had accepted responsibility for downloading and storing the images on his computer.
Henderson pointed out that although the number of images was significant, Logan had not distributed or profited from the collection.
He requested that the court consider a non-custodial sentence, citing Logan’s age, his lack of prior offending, and the positive remarks contained within the background reports.
However, Sheriff Neilson highlighted that Logan had organized and categorized the images, indicating a high level of planning over the three-year period.
She noted that Logan had cooperated with police and had informed them of the location of the images, but she emphasized that the sheer volume and the nature of the content warranted a custodial sentence.
The court also took into account the guidelines from the High Court, which stress that sentences must reflect the seriousness of such offenses.
In her sentencing remarks, Sheriff Neilson stated that, despite Logan’s age, only a custodial sentence could adequately express the court’s disapproval.
Additionally, she ordered that Logan be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for a period of ten years.
The case underscores the ongoing efforts of Scottish authorities to combat child exploitation and the importance of strict sentencing to deter such heinous crimes.
