ALAN GRANT SCOUT LEADER FROM ST MADOES JAILED FOR BOY ABUSE IN PERTHSHIRE

In December 2006, a disturbing case emerged involving Alan Grant, a former scout leader from St Madoes, who was sentenced to nine months in prison for orchestrating a scheme to lure young boys to his residence under false pretenses and subsequently abusing them. Grant, aged 42, who previously held the position of assistant commissioner within the Scottish scouting organization, had devised a deceptive plan by creating fake parental consent forms to facilitate a bogus scout camp.

He admitted to sexually abusing two 15-year-old boys on the nights of March 18 and 19 at his home in Perthshire. The court proceedings revealed that Grant had lied to the parents of the boys, claiming there was an upcoming scout camp that their children could attend. In reality, he had arranged for the boys to be brought to his house in St Madoes, where he engaged in alcohol consumption with them before abusing them.

The investigation was triggered when Grant resigned from his scouting position following the incidents, prompting authorities to scrutinize his motives and conduct. The court heard that Grant, who had been involved with the scouting movement for over two decades as a volunteer, exploited his trusted position to commit these heinous acts.

During the sentencing at Perth Sheriff Court, Sheriff Robert McReadie described Grant’s actions as a gross betrayal of trust, emphasizing the severity of his misconduct. The Scottish Scouting Association responded to the case by asserting that their background checks were as thorough as possible, although this did not prevent Grant from abusing his role.

In a related context, earlier this year, another former scout leader, Paul Firth, was sentenced to prison for a series of sexual offenses against boys spanning over twenty years, highlighting a troubling pattern of abuse within the scouting community.
