January 2006 Ex-DJ wrote child abuse fantasies A former radio DJ who collected more than 4,000 indecent images of children and wrote fantasies of child abuse is starting a 36-month jail sentence. Alan Fossey, 58, from Blaenavon, south Wales, compared his collection of indecent images to stamp collecting, Cardiff Crown court heard. Fossey admitted making indecent pseudo pictures of children, distributing them and publishing obscene articles. Fossey was also banned from using the internet for 10 years. The court heard Fossey published stories totalling more than two million words on the internet. They described the abuse, torture and murder of babies, young children and women, and included the names of real families and children he had come into contact with. Caroline Rees, prosecuting, said the content of the stories was “too depraved and gruesome” to be read in open court. The court heard Fossey told police he was unable to explain why he had written the stories, which he said were pure fantasy. “He described himself as having an obsessive compulsive disorder about collecting the images, comparing it to stamp collecting. “He denied that he had a sexual interest in children but it was in his words, ‘a power thing”‘, Ms Rees said. Internet ban Fossey was exposed when a family whose name he had used discovered the stories on the internet while researching their family name. After police found more than 4,000 images of child abuse on his computer, he pleaded guilty to 23 counts of making indecent pseudo pictures of children, two counts of distributing them to others, and two counts of publishing an obscene article. He asked for 109 other offences to be taken into consideration. Sentencing, Judge Stephen Hopkins said the pictures were among the worst he had ever seen, adding the “degradation, abuse and exploitation of the children in these images almost defies description”. He described the stories as “shocking in the extreme and sickening”. Fossey was jailed for two-and-a-half years, with half spent on licence, and was barred from owning a computer, using the internet, having a private e-mail account or having unsupervised contact with children under 16 for 10 years. He was also barred from working with children and ordered to register as a sex offender. Fossey previously worked as a pirate radio DJ in the 1960s and 1970s and for regional BBC radio. He set up two community radio stations, Crow FM and WHAM! Radio in South Wales, and had also worked in broadcasting in Europe.
