ALAN DAVIES SENTENCED IN NEWPORT FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE CASE
In a tragic case that has shocked the Newport community, 75-year-old Alan Davies from Stockton Road was sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of multiple counts of child sexual abuse.The sentencing took place at Newport Crown Court, where Davies was found guilty following a trial that revealed disturbing details about his crimes.
Davies faced nine counts of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child.
Throughout the proceedings, he maintained his innocence, denying all allegations brought against him.
The court heard that the victim was a girl under the age of 13 when the abuse occurred, which spanned over a period of four years during the 1970s and 1980s.
The lengthy duration of the abuse and the young age of the victim underscored the severity of the case.
Marian Lewis, representing Davies, highlighted his poor health condition, noting that he entered the dock using a mobility walker.
She requested that the court consider concurrent sentences and keep the overall punishment as short as possible, citing his age and health issues.
However, Judge Daniel Williams was clear in his condemnation of Davies' actions, describing the abuse as 'terrible' and emphasizing the profound impact on the victim.
Judge Williams stated that Davies was not entitled to any reduction in his sentence for admitting guilt, as he had not pleaded guilty.
He explained that the legal maximum at the time of the offences was five years for indecent assault and two years for gross indecency with a child.
Despite this, the judge stressed that the court must consider the totality of the offending and the devastating effect it had on the victim.
He remarked that if the offences had been committed more recently, the sentencing could have included charges of rape and assault by penetration, reflecting the gravity of the crimes.
The judge described the victim as being as young as under 13 and noted that the harm inflicted upon her was 'ruinous.' Judge Williams concluded that only an immediate custodial sentence could be justified given the seriousness of the offences.
He also warned that if Davies were to live to an advanced age, he would serve approximately two-thirds of his sentence before potential release, underscoring the long-lasting impact of his crimes and the court's stance on protecting vulnerable children from such heinous acts.
