ALAN CRABTREE OF SALFORD ESCAPES JAIL AFTER DOWNLOAD OF CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
In June 2019, a disturbing case emerged involving Alan Crabtree, a 72-year-old retired miner from Salford, who was found to have downloaded and stored a significant number of indecent images depicting child abuse. The investigation revealed that Crabtree had saved a total of 85 such images onto his personal devices, including two mobile phones. Among these, 13 were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of abuse.Crabtree, who has spent his entire life residing in Salford, claimed that his interest in these disturbing images was driven by curiosity, which he described as a 'compulsion.' He admitted that he initially used social media platforms to locate these images, a behavior that he later recognized as deeply problematic. His family, who described him as a 'loving and supportive father,' were completely unaware of his secret until police officers arrived at their family home to execute a warrant and seized his electronic devices.
The police action was initiated after receiving intelligence from the National Crime Agency. On December 8, 2017, officers attended Crabtree’s residence and confiscated two laptops along with two mobile phones—one an Acer and the other a Samsung. During police interviews, Crabtree admitted that the illicit images could be found on his devices, confirming his involvement in the possession of these harmful materials.
Crabtree faced charges at Manchester Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent photographs of children. Despite the gravity of his actions, he was spared a custodial sentence and was instead sentenced to a 12-month community order. The judge expressed astonishment that a man of Crabtree’s character could commit such offenses, emphasizing that these crimes are not victimless and that the children depicted in the images had been subjected to abuse.
The offenses spanned from April 2015 to December 2017, and the case highlighted the importance of vigilant law enforcement and intelligence sharing. Prosecutor Juliet Berry detailed the police operation, stating, “After receiving the information, police attended at his address on 8 December 2017 and executed a warrant. They seized two laptops and two mobile phones—one Acer phone and one Samsung phone. He was interviewed and admitted that the images could be found on the phones.”
In passing sentence, Recorder Geoffrey Lowe acknowledged Crabtree’s previously clean record, noting that his remorse and efforts to seek help could allow for rehabilitation. The judge remarked, “It’s astonishing to see a man of your background in this situation. These are not victimless offences. The children whose photos are taken are abused. Some of these images reflect the most serious sexual abuse of these children. You regarded this as something that started out as a curiosity then became a compulsion. You have shown remorse and sought to seek assistance. This is a blemish on an otherwise exemplary record. If these matters are addressed, there is no reason why you cannot go back to being the hard-working and respectful man you was.”
As part of his sentence, Crabtree was ordered to complete 20 days of rehabilitation activities and to sign the Sex Offenders Register for five years. Additionally, he was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his access to the internet to prevent further offenses. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation and the importance of swift law enforcement action against those who seek to exploit vulnerable children.
