ALAN BADLEY, CONVICTED RAPIST FROM BIRKENHEAD, REPEATEDLY BREACHES SEX OFFENDER RULES

Alan Badley, a convicted rapist from Woodchurch in Birkenhead, has repeatedly violated the rules of the Sex Offenders Register, claiming he did so because he was 'running scared.' Badley, who once raped a woman in her home and threatened to showcase a video of the assault on his estate, was convicted in December 2008.

The 20-year-old at the time assaulted the woman during a violent three-hour attack in April 2008, headbutting and punching her until she managed to escape, fleeing bloodied to a neighbor's house after convincing him she was going out to buy cigarettes.

He was subsequently sentenced to seven years in prison and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Despite this, Liverpool Crown Court heard today that Badley has continued to breach its terms, including failing to inform police when he changes address.

Prosecutor Simon Duncan explained that on September 7, 2020, Badley told police he was living at Rice Lane, Wallasey.

However, when an offender manager visited on April 19, 2021, they found Badley's flat trashed and unoccupied.

Badley only admitted the flat was empty after his arrest on June 3, during which he claimed he left in March to buy cheap cars for accommodation.

Mr Duncan noted that Badley told police he had developed a relationship with a married woman at the flat, was threatened by her partner, and left for a few days.

Judge Gary Woodhall remarked that this was consistent with evidence found at the scene, including graffiti.

Additionally, on March 19, police in Caernarfon, North Wales, detained Badley after a passerby called authorities.

Officers found him sitting in the driver's seat of a running vehicle with a woman in the passenger seat.

They detected the smell of alcohol and cannabis; Badley admitted having 'a few sips of vodka' and handed over a cannabis grinder.

He failed a roadside breathalyzer test, with a reading of 40mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath—the legal limit is 35mg.

Badley, previously banned from driving in 2003 for dangerous driving, did not complete an extended retest required to restore his license.

He then explained to police that he traveled to North Wales to 'chill out,' but after parking his car, he was asked to move it, during which he crashed into a wall.

His car was still lodged against the wall when police arrived.

While on bail for this incident and still wanted for breaching his notification requirements, Badley drove again on June 3.

Police caught him driving a Ford Fiesta with false plates on the M53 in Birkenhead at approximately 8:40 a.m.

He subsequently admitted failing to comply with notification rules, two counts of driving while disqualified, without insurance, altering a vehicle registration, being in charge of a vehicle over the alcohol limit, and breaching bail.

His criminal record includes four prior breaches of notification requirements, one of which led to a three-year jail sentence in 2017 for assaults and harassment in the North East, including threats to kill and persuading a partner to euthanize a pet.

His last breach, after a period of homelessness, resulted in a 26-week jail sentence suspended for 18 months.

During today’s hearing, Badley's current girlfriend was present and had written a letter to the judge.

Defense lawyer Bernice Campbell described his offences as linked to his 'chaotic life,' noting that he was released from prison, lacked a fixed address, and had struggled with substance abuse, including alcohol, cannabis, and heroin, but was now on methadone and receiving medication for depression and anxiety.

Ms.

Campbell stated that Badley's recent breach was not deliberate but driven by fear for his safety amid threats.

She added that his partner was willing to support him and provide a home following his release.

The judge, before passing sentence, adjourned proceedings for sentencing after 2 p.m.

Badley appeared via video link from HMP Altcourse, asking, 'Do I have to come back for that your honour?' to which Judge Woodhall replied, 'You do,' prompting a groan from Badley.

The judge then sentenced him to 20 months in prison, including four months of his suspended sentence, and banned him from driving for two years and ten months.
