ADNAN KIIZA PLEADS GUILTY TO SEXUAL ABUSE IN HANLEY AND PENKHULL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local communities of Hanley and Penkhull, teacher Adnan Kiiza has been convicted of indecently assaulting a 12-year-old girl during a private tutoring session. The incident, which took place in July 2003, involved the 58-year-old educator abusing the young girl for a duration of up to ten minutes while he was providing her with extra assistance in mathematics. At the time of the offence, Kiiza was employed as a mathematics teacher at Thistley Hough High School, located in Penkhull. The assault did not occur on school premises but during a private lesson, which makes the case particularly troubling given the trust placed in educators. The investigation into the incident was initiated in July of the previous year, 2010, after the girl unexpectedly encountered Kiiza again and decided to come forward with her complaint.
Following a thorough legal process, Kiiza, who resides on Denbigh Street in Hanley, pleaded guilty to the charge of indecent assault. He was subsequently sentenced to 14 months in prison by Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. In addition to his prison term, he has been ordered to sign the sex offenders' register for a period of ten years and is permanently barred from working with children in any capacity.
Prosecutor Paul Spratt clarified that the assault occurred between July 1 and July 31, 2003, emphasizing that the offence was not committed within the school environment but during a private tutoring session. He stated, “He was giving the girl additional help with her maths. At the time, the defendant was a Maths teacher at Thistley Hough High School.” Spratt also noted that Kiiza is no longer employed in the teaching profession.
Kiiza’s legal representative, Anis Ali, described his client as an “intelligent and hard-working man” with no prior convictions. Ali expressed remorse, stating, “He has carried the burden of his guilt for several years. He deeply regrets what he has done. He is embarrassed and ashamed. The offence happened many years ago and there has been no repetition since.”
Judge Paul Glenn, presiding over the case, sentenced Kiiza to the prison term and remarked on the impact of his actions: “The victim of this indecent assault sat with you while you were teaching her maths. She was shocked, confused and anxious.”
Following the sentencing, Councillor Debra Gratton, who is responsible for children’s services at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, issued a statement. She confirmed that Kiiza was employed at Thistley Hough High School from May 2003 until August 2005, following the usual stringent checks. She also clarified that the school was unaware of the incident, which occurred outside of school premises, and that Kiiza is no longer a city council employee.
