ADILEY PIRES FROM IPSWICH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN IPSWICH AND TOWER MILL STREET
A convicted sex offender from Ipswich, Adiley Pires, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being found guilty of multiple serious charges related to attacks on young women in the town.Despite his conviction, Pires chose not to attend his sentencing hearing, which was held at Ipswich Crown Court.
On October 26, following a nine-day trial, the jury convicted Pires, 25, of Kensington Road, Ipswich, on two counts of attempted rape, one count of sexual assault, and one count of common assault.
The court heard that these charges stemmed from two separate incidents that occurred in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
The first incident took place in the early hours of October 17, 2021, between 3:10 am and 3:20 am.
During this attack, Pires pursued an 18-year-old woman who was walking along the waterfront in Ipswich, heading towards Stoke Bridge.
The victim was approached by Pires, who attempted to initiate conversation, and then proceeded to touch her bottom.
When she told him to leave her alone, Pires did not desist but instead chased her into a courtyard of an apartment complex on College Street.
In the courtyard, Pires reportedly pushed the woman into a flower planter and tried to lift her dress, actions that caused her to scream loudly.
Her cries attracted the attention of nearby residents, who shouted at Pires, causing him to flee the scene.
CCTV footage from Cardinal Park on the night of the incident showed Pires watching the victim as she left a nightclub, then following her to the waterfront.
The club later issued an appeal for information, which contributed to Pires's arrest on October 23.
Initially, law enforcement officers sought advice on charging Pires with attempted rape.
However, after reviewing the evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service determined that additional charges were necessary.
Pires was subsequently bailed, required to surrender his passport, and placed under a curfew.
He was also mandated to present himself to police officers at his home for checks.
The second assault occurred on December 8, 2022, at approximately 11:40 pm on Tower Mill Street.
Pires approached a 17-year-old girl from behind after she entered a towpath on Yarmouth Road.
He then grabbed her, pulled her to the ground, and covered her mouth in an attempt to remove her leggings.
The victim fought back, calling for help and attracting the attention of nearby residents.
Pires then fled the scene.
Following this attack, police conducted a CCTV investigation that linked Pires to the incident.
He was identified as a suspect due to the similarities with the earlier attack and his presence at relevant locations at the time.
Pires was arrested on December 15 and charged accordingly.
Throughout the trial, Pires admitted to the charge of assault by beating but denied the other allegations, claiming that the attacks were not sexually motivated.
Nevertheless, the jury rejected his claims and found him guilty of all charges.
He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with an extended license period of six years, totaling a 21-year sentence.
Additionally, Pires was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
Detective Inspector James Cassedy, the senior investigating officer, described Pires as a predator who targeted lone women walking home after nights out in Ipswich.
He emphasized that Pires tracked his victims’ movements and followed them to isolated areas, believing he could attack without interference.
However, both victims fought back and called for help, which ultimately led to his arrest.
Inspector Cassedy praised the bravery of the victims and the members of the public who assisted during both incidents.
He highlighted their efforts in helping to deter Pires and support the victims until police arrived.
The Suffolk Constabulary reaffirmed its commitment to tackling sexual violence and violence against women and girls, vowing to continue working tirelessly to bring offenders like Pires to justice and ensure the safety of the community.
