ADIL SHEIKH'S HORRIFIC RABBIT ABUSE IN EDINBURGH REVEALED

In a disturbing case that has shocked animal welfare advocates, Adil Sheikh, a small animal breeder residing at 98 Chesser Loan in Edinburgh EH14 1UJ, was found guilty in 2025 of gross neglect and cruelty towards a group of rabbits kept at his property. The case highlights the severe consequences of neglecting animal health and welfare, with Sheikh failing to provide basic veterinary care for the 17 rabbits living in his back garden.

On March 27, 2023, Scottish SPCA Inspector Chalcroft responded to a complaint from a concerned individual who had visited Sheikh’s property with the intention of purchasing rabbits advertised on Gumtree. What they discovered was a scene of neglect and suffering. The inspector reported that the rabbits were housed in a muddy, unkempt hutch with only a single water bottle for all of them, and no fresh hay or food available. The environment was damp and soiled, reflecting a prolonged period of poor maintenance.

During the inspection, several rabbits exhibited visible injuries and signs of severe neglect. One fawn tortoiseshell rabbit was found sitting on damp hay, visibly injured around its eyes. Another black rabbit, with white markings around its nose, was seen nibbling at the injured eye of the tortoiseshell. Multiple other rabbits displayed injuries such as torn eyelids, infected facial wounds, and mutilated noses. The inspector noted that many of these injuries appeared to have occurred months or even a year prior, as the skin had healed improperly, indicating a lack of veterinary intervention.

Further examination revealed that seven of the rabbits were suffering from irreversible dental issues, which would have caused them significant pain and distress. One heavily pregnant female rabbit with a fawn tortoiseshell coat had severe mutilation to both eyes, rendering her blind and in a poor physical state. Her injuries suggested she had endured considerable suffering due to Sheikh’s failure to seek veterinary help. Given her condition and her inability to care for her unborn kits, it was decided that euthanasia was the most humane option.

Another male fawn tortoiseshell rabbit was found with trauma affecting both eyelids, which were torn and infected. He also exhibited signs of respiratory distress, and his mutilated nose had healed with very small openings, making breathing difficult. The severity of his injuries, which appeared to have occurred months to a year earlier, led to the decision to euthanise him to prevent further suffering. The injuries and poor health of all examined rabbits pointed to prolonged malnutrition, with their matted, muddy fur indicating an environment that was unsuitable for their well-being over an extended period.

It was also revealed that Sheikh had failed to separate male and female rabbits or to neuter them, resulting in unplanned breeding over several months or years. At least two generations of rabbits were present, and many injuries among the animals appeared to be the result of inter-rabbit attacks, likely due to overcrowding and lack of proper care.

Following the inspection, all the rabbits were removed from Sheikh’s property under section 32 of the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act. A veterinary assessment confirmed that the animals were suffering from infected skin conditions, eye injuries, overgrown teeth, and poor body condition. The veterinary report emphasized that the injuries and neglect had caused the rabbits considerable pain and distress.

In court, Sheikh pleaded guilty to the charges, which included failing to provide veterinary attention for the rabbits’ injuries and neglecting their basic needs. He was fined £380 and received a three-year ban from owning or caring for animals, which will expire in February 2028. The Scottish SPCA expressed their disappointment with the relatively lenient sentence, stating that the prolonged suffering and unsanitary conditions warranted a longer ban.

Despite his involvement in animal care, Sheikh is known to work as a boxing coach and has various business interests, including overseas travel and tourism, global business networking, Asian women’s clothing, and a Halal restaurant, catering, and wholesale business called Elfalafel. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglecting vulnerable creatures in one’s care.
