BRISTOL POLICE OFFICER ADAM LEIGHTON JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND EXTREME PORNOGRAPHY
In a shocking case that has sent ripples through the community of Bristol, a former police officer named Adam Leighton has been sentenced to prison for heinous crimes involving child exploitation and possession of extreme pornography. The incident, which came to light in February 2019, revealed a disturbing pattern of online grooming and the possession of highly degrading images involving animals.
Adam Leighton, aged 45 and residing on Priory Road in Portbury, Bristol, was a long-serving member of the Avon & Somerset Constabulary.
He had dedicated many years to law enforcement, including involvement in suspect interviews over the past four years.
However, his career was abruptly terminated last month when he was dismissed from the force following his criminal admissions.
Despite his clean prior record, the severity of his offenses overshadowed his previous service.
The case was brought to public attention after a member of the public, who engaged with Leighton on social media, became concerned about the nature of their conversations.
This individual reported their suspicions to a child protection charity, which subsequently alerted the police.
The investigation uncovered a series of disturbing online exchanges between Leighton and a woman, in which he attempted to persuade her to involve her young children in sexual activities.
The conversations, which initially took place on the 'Plenty of Fish' dating platform, quickly escalated to more explicit and alarming content.
Leighton adopted a false identity on the dating website, lying about his personal circumstances and his location in Bristol.
He appeared to craft a background similar to that of the woman he was communicating with, in an apparent attempt to build trust.
The exchanges soon shifted from casual chatting to explicit sexual content, with Leighton repeatedly bringing up her children and suggesting inappropriate acts involving them.
The woman, alarmed by the nature of his messages, decided to contact law enforcement authorities.
During the police investigation, Leighton’s laptop was seized, revealing a cache of extreme pornography.
The images included videos depicting bestiality, such as a man being raped by a bull, and other highly degrading content involving women and animals.
Prosecutors described these images as utterly degrading and disturbing, emphasizing their graphic nature.
The possession of such material was a significant factor in the case, highlighting the extent of Leighton’s deviant interests.
At the court hearing, Judge Ian Lawrie QC expressed his condemnation of Leighton’s actions, stating, “Within you there is a sexual deviancy of concern.” The judge also noted that Leighton was suffering from leukemia and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder at the time of the offenses, but he dismissed these health issues as not being directly linked to his criminal behavior.
The defense argued that Leighton’s judgment was impaired due to his health conditions and the influence of powerful medication, as well as his exposure to certain literature on sexual fantasies, which they claimed influenced his actions.
Despite these arguments, the judge was unequivocal in his assessment, condemning Leighton’s breach of trust as a police officer and his disturbing online conduct.
The court heard that Leighton had engaged in a calculated effort to manipulate the woman, including fabricating a story about having a daughter and claiming to have sexually assaulted her.
His messages included explicit suggestions that her children should touch her, and he persistently sought to involve her in sexual acts with her young children.
The woman’s concern grew to the point where she contacted the police, leading to Leighton’s arrest.
Following his arrest, authorities seized his electronic devices, uncovering a collection of images and videos of extreme pornography involving animals, including acts of oral and penetrative sex.
The images, which lasted approximately 57 minutes of video footage, were described as profoundly offensive and degrading.
Leighton’s actions demonstrated a clear breach of the trust placed in him as a police officer, and his conduct was deemed to reflect a dark and troubling aspect of his character.
Leighton’s health issues, including leukemia diagnosed in 1990, were considered by the court but ultimately deemed unrelated to his criminal conduct.
The judge emphasized that Leighton was fully aware of the illegality of his actions and that his attempts to explain his behavior due to health problems were unconvincing.
The court also noted his reluctance to accept responsibility for his deviant behavior.
In sentencing, Judge Lawrie QC ordered Leighton to serve a prison term, with no possibility of suspension, and mandated that he register as a sex offender for ten years.
The judge expressed deep concern about the potential harm and the breach of trust involved, especially given Leighton’s role as a police officer.
The case underscores the importance of vigilance and accountability within law enforcement, as well as the ongoing threat posed by individuals who abuse positions of authority for malicious and illegal purposes.
