ABUBAKER MUBIRU AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULT IN DERBY AND EAST MIDLANDS AIRPORT
A man identified as Abubaker Mubiru was recently involved in a disturbing incident that culminated in a criminal conviction for sexual assault and was later seen wandering disheveled at East Midlands Airport in the early hours of Tuesday morning. This revelation comes shortly after Mubiru was granted bail at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court, where he had pleaded guilty to a serious sexual offense committed earlier in Derby city centre.
On the day of his court appearance, Mubiru was released from custody with a scheduled sentencing date set for later this month.
However, within mere hours, he violated the conditions of his bail.
Court proceedings and police reports reveal that Mubiru did not return to his previous accommodations, which was a violation of the restrictions imposed on him.
Instead, at approximately 3:45 a.m.
on August 16, officers at East Midlands Airport were called to the passenger departure hall after reports indicated suspicious behavior.
According to police reports, Mubiru was found lying asleep on a bench, appearing disheveled and unkempt.
He was also reportedly asking strangers for food, seemingly in a confused or distressed state.
When approached by officers, he gave his personal details and acknowledged that he was wanted for breaching his bail conditions.
Consequently, he was taken into custody.
During questioning, Mubiru refused to communicate with his solicitor or mental health professionals, a fact noted by the court.
District Judge Andrew Meaching queried whether Mubiru wanted to be kept in custody, to which he declined, expressing a preference not to be imprisoned.
The previous court hearing outlined the gravity of the incident for which Mubiru was convicted.
On May 28, Mubiru approached a woman and made a distressingly explicit statement, saying, “I want to feel your f***y up,” before physically grabbing her private area.
Prosecutor Freddie Sail detailed that the assault took place in Friar Gate, Derby, as the victim, who was accompanied by two friends, was walking along the street.
According to prosecutor Sail, Mubiru was initially seen urinating against a wall of a pub before approaching the group and making the lewd comment.
As the woman and her friends moved past, Mubiru forcibly touched her in a sexual manner without consent, prompting her to verbally protest and threaten to call the police.
His behavior then escalated as he appeared confrontational, puffing his chest in front of her friends and making an attempt to inappropriately touch another of her friends.
Police intervened and arrested Mubiru at the scene.
During police questioning, he inquired about CCTV footage of the incident but refused to make any further statements after being told no footage was available.
Mubiru, who does not have a fixed address but is currently housed by the local authority in a hotel in Derby city centre, pleaded guilty to the sexual assault.
The court records also indicate that Mubiru has a criminal history comprising seven previous convictions for twelve separate offenses, none of which relate to sexual crimes.
His legal representation during the Monday hearing emphasized that he had spent time in a secure mental health unit following the incident, suggesting that his actions were influenced by intoxication and mental health issues.
His behavior, the solicitor noted, was out of character, and he has not reoffended since.
Judge Meachin emphasized to Mubiru that he will be required to register as a sex offender, with the formal length of registration to be determined at the upcoming sentencing hearing scheduled for August 31.
The case highlights the serious consequences associated with breaches of bail conditions and the ongoing concerns surrounding sexual offenses in Derby and the surrounding East Midlands region.
